dude, a magnitude 8 quake is huge. the great San Franscisco quake (I think 1908) was only a 7.7. this is higher. Hokkaido will be lucky if their entire island isn't mincemeat, and resulting tsunamis could hit anywhere from Alaska to Hawaii to Russia.

edit: Hokkaido isn't a city

For a quake so big, it's amazing more people weren't hurt. No reports of fatalities yet, which is even more amazing.

They called the guy who predicted a large quake in Japan crazy.

A little low on the mag, a little early on the date, but still...7-pluses don't happen every day.

Update on Hokkaido:

A magnitude 8.0 earthquake rocked Japan's northern island of Hokkaido early Friday, injuring more than 230 people, knocking out power, derailing a train and touching off an industrial fire.

There were no immediate reports of deaths directly caused by the quake in the hours following the temblor that forced the evacuation of some 41,000 people and left some 16,000 homes blacked out.

www.guardian.co.uk...

Unfortunately, the number of injured will probably rise some more.
This could have been so much worse.

I think the reason for the lower fatality rate is that the epicenter was Offshore...
I have to check again, but I am pretty sure that I read that early on. Still.... that is a very low number for such a strong quake.

Ummm has anyone wondered if this might possibly be a side effect of the usage of HAARP to downgrade Isabel?
I know, its a shot in the dark.... but this is ATS.

From Flinx "Wow, you guys panic so easily.... "

We are not panicking for ourselves.
Sorry our compasion for our fellow human beings is a bother to you.

From CCN story
"Earlier this month, Japan marked the 80th anniversary of a magnitude 8.3 quake that devastated Tokyo and neighboring Yokohama, killing at least 140,000 people.

In January 1995, a magnitude 7.2 temblor in Kobe killed more than 6,000 people. "
