Coming a few days after all schools and nurserys in the Iranian capital Tehran were closed for days because of air pollution reaching dangerous levels the BBC are reporting that;

    Hundreds treated over Tehran smog

    More than 1,600 people have been taken to hospitals in Tehran as pollution in the Iranian capital reaches critical levels, health officials have said.

    Hospitals have reported increased cases of heart attacks and breathing problems, while many residents are complaining of fatigue and headaches.

While there are no officially reported deaths caused state television "...did say that levels of carbon monoxide, suspended particles and other pollutants had become critical in Tehran and the southern district of Shahr-e Rey." I had no idea pollution there was so terrible. With talk of 3 million cars and up to 5,000 people each year dying form this pollution it looks very much like a country with good reason indeed to avert as much attention as possible away from the situation there and get it's population focusing on other issues.

The Pollution standard Index reached a level of 160, considered to be in the 'very unhealthy' level.

Blame is being directed at the more than 2m vehicles in the city, many more than 20 years old.

Cars that old can cause great environmental damage if not proerly maintained.
