Proper Quoting

Topic started on 9-12-2005 @ 10:34 PM by 2stepsfromtop

Quoting articles, other websites and threads related to your post is a major way to make your thread stand out and look professional. Many people have seen sections of posts where a Box contains the quotation of information from other sources that supports the authors post. So lets make this easy.
Brackets [ ] are used to enclose commands used on boards like ATS, brackets are very important.
A Quotation is built like this (without the spaces in between on the commands)

[ quote ]

Body of Text

[ / quote ]

The word "quote" tells the program what the command is about.
The "/" tells the program to 'end' the command, so reading it in order it would say "[ quote ]" Do a quotation box and fill it with everything leading up to the "[ / quote ]" End Quote command. Remember, no spaces in the commands, otherwise the program will not recognise them.

Remember to try to trim the quote to only the section that is relevant to your post, and avoid using nested quotes

like

this

when responding to posts, as they are rarely necessary to make it clear what you are responding to and after a while get very hard to read, as well as take up space on the servers.

Another way to quote someone's post is to hit the "Quote" button in the upper right corner of the post you wish to quote. It will then be displayed in your reply window. You can trim it down (but don't change any of the contents) and then post your reply.

The new External quote tags are the proper way to quote all external sources and are explained here:
