I was intrigued by an email I found as I cleaned out my inbox today, part of which reads as follows:

You are receiving this notice because you were a paid Netflix member before January 15, 2005. Under a proposed class action settlement, you may be eligible to receive a free benefit from Netflix.

A class action lawsuit entitled Chavez v. Netflix, Inc. was filed in San Francisco Superior Court (case number CGC-04-434884) on September 23, 2004. The lawsuit alleges that Netflix failed to provide "unlimited" DVD rentals and "one day delivery" as promised in its marketing materials. Netflix has denied any wrongdoing or liability. The parties have reached a settlement that they believe is in the best interests of the company and its subscribers.

Netflix will provide eligible subscribers with the benefit described below, if the settlement is approved by the Court.

* Current Netflix Members: If you enrolled in a paid membership before January 15, 2005 and were a member on October 19, 2005, you are eligible to receive a free one-month upgrade in service level. For example, if you are on the 3 DVDs at-a-time program, you will be upgraded to the 4 DVDs at-a-time program for one month. There will be no price increase during the upgraded month. (If you cancel your membership after October 19, 2005 and before you receive the upgrade, you will have to rejoin to get the upgrade.)


* Former Netflix Members: If you enrolled in a paid membership before January 15, 2005 but were not a member on October 19, 2005, you are eligible to receive a free one-month Netflix membership on your choice of the 1, 2 or 3 DVDs at-a-time unlimited program. (If you rejoin after October 19, 2005 but before you receive the free one-month membership, you will receive a credit for the free month when it becomes available.)

These benefits will be provided after the Effective Date as defined in the Settlement Agreement. Your eligibility for the benefits is based on your membership status as of October 19, 2005. The full Settlement Agreement is available for review at www.netflixsettlement.com.

I wasn't impressed with Netflix when I used it, but I certainly have no desire to turn down a month of free rentals!

I do like using Netflix, better than Blockbuster for me at least. I still go to Blockbuster when I want an immediate rental but I use Netflix overall. Mainly because I am a movie junkie and like to watch at least 3 a week which is what I usually do. Going to Blockbuster all the time was a bit hard for me and Netflix saves me some money renting.

I think Netflix looks kind of interesting but I have yet to try it. We use to rent movies all the time but have cut back. Do you really think Netflix is worth it? We probably wouldn't rent more then three a week. I like the idea of them being delivered to you and no late fees. JediMaster, can you tell me much you pay for three a week? Or what is the best plan to go with?

My plan is 17.99 for a month. It gives you 3 rentals at a time and you have an unlimited amount of rentals. What I do is as soon as I see them I send them back. It takes about 3 days to send them back and two days to recieve them. On average I would say I see about 10 a month using it. I believe that it's worth it since I do enjoy seeing a lot of movies and Netflix has a very nice and wide variety of films to choose from. Aside from actualy movies there are television series, documentaries, special interest such as sports and yoga.

They do offer a 2 week trial for people and all you have to do is send the movies back within that two weeks and cancel the trial.

If you don't plan to see that many or don't have that much time to see three movies a week, the other plans under 17.99 are...

2 at-a-time (Unlimited) for $14.99
Unlimited rentals - up to 2 movies out at a time for a flat monthly fee of $14.99

2 at-a-time (4 a month) for $11.99
Up to 4 rentals a month - up to 2 movies out at a time for a flat monthly fee of $11.99.

1 at-a-time (Unlimited) for $9.99
Unlimited rentals - up to 1 movie out at a time for a flat monthly fee of $9.99.

Aditionally there are plans that cost more and the highest you can rent is 8 at a time.
