MosNews: Russian Metals Giant RusAl Launches Aluminium Foil Production in Armenia

05.12.2005

RusAl, Russia’s largest and world’s third largest primary aluminium producer, has launched production at its Armenian foil-folding asset, hailing the newly revamped Armenal as “the best factory in Europe”.

Armenal, the sole foil producer in the Caucasus and Central Asia, “will be technically and by every parameter the most powerful factory in Europe,” Alexander Liv$hits, deputy chief of RusAl, said at the opening ceremony attended by Russia’s Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov and Armenian President Robert Kocharyan.

“It is the best factory in Europe, having no analogies in either Russia or Europe. It will produce only for export, products of the highest quality. 97 percent of that export will be mostly for Europe,” Liv$hits added, quoted by the France Press agency.

AllAfrica.com: Russia-Nigeria Aluminium Deal 'Corrupt'

Business Day (Johannesburg)
February 10, 2006

A privatisation deal to sell control of the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (Alscon) to Russian Aluminium (Rusal) has come under attack

Nigerian members of parliament have passed a resolution on the deal, which was announced last week and confirmed by Rusal, saying it "amounts to corruption and fraud to the nation". President Olusegun Obasanjo and his personal advisers are directly involved in the scandal, according to the Nigerian-American company Bancorp Financial Investment Group (BFIG), whose high bid for Alscon was first accepted and then rejected by Nigerian government officials. Nigeria's Federal Appeals Court is reviewing a legal challenge by BFIG, which could cancel the Rusal deal

Seems like they are going to make even more tin foil and lots of it too. RUSAL wants to double their output of aluminium by 2013, so they will have lots of tin foil by 2012. The Russians (RUSAL) are now building an aluminium smelter in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan and Armenia are not so good friends though...

Mosnews: Russia to Create World’s Largest Aluminium Producer — Report

21.08.2006

Russian aluminium firms RUSAL and SUAL plan to announce a merger this fall, creating a national monopoly and the world’s largest aluminium producer, Kommersant daily reported on Monday, Aug. 21, quoting sources close to SUAL’s owner Viktor Vekselberg.

RUSAL is currently the world’s third-largest aluminium producer behind Alcoa and Alcan. SUAL is the world’s sixth-largest aluminium producer.

In 2005 SUAL produced 1.05 million tons of aluminium and RUSAL produced 2.7 million tons. If merged, the two companies would produce at least 3.7 million tons of aluminium, which is more than what Alcan and Alcoa currently produce (3.5 million tons each).
