I thought the virus only began to mutate, and hasn't actually taken the step to be for it to able to be contracted from another person...

Tell that to the people who have not contacted a bird in years, and when they tend there family members who got sick from visiting the zoo earlier
they also get it. And when the governments have to tell you(after many hundreds die and its undeniable that its spreading), it will be too late. Some
people have to feel fire to believe it is hot.
