Germany's new Chancellor Angela Merkel will be meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush in Washington on January 11th, according to a White House spokesman:

Nov. 30 (Bloomberg) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Jan. 11 will meet for the first time in Washington with President George W. Bush, a White House spokesman said.

``The two leaders look forward to discussing how the United States and Germany can strengthen our partnership and trans- Atlantic ties and work together to expand freedom and prosperity around the world,'' White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said at a briefing with reporters.

Merkel, 51, was sworn into office Nov. 22 as the first woman chancellor of Europe's largest economy, succeeding Gerhard Schroeder.

Good! It looks like she's going to try to fulfill her campaign promise of repairing the strained ties between the U.S. and Germany fostered by Schroeder's regime.

The ties between Germany and the USA were never "broken" to a point they need repairing. It was Schröder and Bush that had didnt get along with each other. And dont forget that the whole animosity and the insults did not originate in Germany

So please dont put it as if it was a german "Walk to Canossa".

Sory to sound too political but...

Not that Schroeder was an angel but, "strained ties between the U.S. and Germany fostered by Schroeder's regime." The whole unsupported war thing was the cause of that not whomever was leading Germany at the time. Also cant wait to see what Merkel will do!
