It would seem that facial recognition software will be spread across all of Victoria Australia very soon... Smile, Big Brother likes it when he can see your teeth....

Spy camera test

HI-TECH spy cameras that can pinpoint criminal activity are to be tested across Victoria.

But their ability to differentiate between lawful and unlawful behaviour has been questioned by civil libertarians, who warn of a Big Brother approach.
The cameras are said to be able to identify and record everything from drug dealing, car theft and street robberies to the length of grass in council parks.

They are controlled by technology built into a network of street poles.

Police Minister Andre Haermeyer said the technology was less intrusive than existing surveillance cameras because it was aimed at unlawful behaviour.

"It is not intrusive at all on people who are doing the right thing," Mr Haermeyer said.

"It only picks up the sort of behaviour we do want to know about -- not those we're not interested in."
