After extensive research on Groom Lake I found in one of my books on the F-117 that Area 51 does not belong to the USAF. This is the Reason the Airforce has been able to deny the base. Even though it's in an Airforce range, it was built for the CIA. So does the CIA still own Area 51 or does someone else run the base now?

They have, and still do run it... It never has been an Air Force base...it is a testing facility, simple as that....hence, the only official name as a testing site... It is used by other entities, such as NASA, Lockheed, USAF, etc. but is still operated by intelligence.

Other known affiliations that Area 51 has is with Wackenhutt which provides security, AKA the "Camo Dudes". (Wackenhutt is reportedly a front organization for the CIA).

Also, the radio frequencies that have been monitored being used by the Camo Dudes have been identified as belonging to a frequency block assigned to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) by the FCC.

One article I read about this indicated that after the above mentioned frequency identification had been made, the investigator contacted the regional FEMA director for an interview. Thinking this was going to be a normal media interview, the FEMA director was quite happy to oblige, until it was mentioned that FEMA frequencies were in use at Area 51, at which point the director said something to the effect of "Do you want me to go to prison for discussing this?"

My theory is that it's a joint collitian with different Branches. The USAF has permission to use it but FEMA and the CIA run the show. The main question is why is it the only US installation besides the one housing our nuclear arsenal that has a Shoot to kill policy for tresspasers?

The guards at 51 are EG&G. Wackenhut guards NTS, which you have to go through to get to 51.

So are you indicating that the famed "Camo Dudes are attached to NTS rather than Area 51 proper?

Do you have any documentation on this?

take a couple mags and fire 90 or so rounds at it,then you'll see who's running.

Always figured the CIA & USAF had a hand in the place. Why the connection to FEMA?

DET 3 AFFTC

Detachment 3, Air Force Flight Test Center

The Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC), headquartered at Edwards Air Force Base, is the presumed operator of the secret air base at Groom Lake (Area 51). This assumption is drawn because "AFFTC" appears on many documents regarding base security and land use, and known Groom Lake alumni claim AFFTC credentials. AFFTC is a logical master because the Groom Lake base was founded for the testing of secret aircraft -- initially the U-2 -- and Edwards is responsible for that function. Groom Lake is Detachment 3 (DET 3) of AFFTC. Det. 3 Personnel often claim to have worked at Nellis Air Force Base or "Pittman Station," a now-defunct post office in Henderson, Nevada.

According to the 1994 environmental impact study of Edwards AFB [Reported by [email protected]] 18 off-base properties are owned by the Air Force Flight Test Center, including the following:

Beatty, NV: 32 acres, 1959 to present, Aircraft Test Research Facility

Bishop, CA: 62 acres, 1966 to present, Test Site

Coyote Flats (SW of Bishop): 642 acres, 1965 to present, Test Site

Also included are a string of microwave radar annexes and microwave relays running from Goshute, NV to Mt. Pinos, CA which were established in 1971 and 1972. Four missile tracking annexes in California are included.

Area 51 is
Edwards DET 3
Starting only with the phrase "Pittman Station" astute web surfers have come up with strong evidence that the base at Groom Lake is operated by Detachment 3 of the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base.

Here's how it happened...

In DR#35 we connected Area 51 to "Pittman Station, Henderson," site of a defunct post office that once received mail for the base. We also directly linked the Cammo Dudes to the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) at Edwards Air Force Base*.

Reader R. Stanton ([email protected]), plugged "Pittman Station" into the Alta Vista web search and came back with a 1990 NASA press release* listing astronaut candidates [local copy]. One of these astronauts, Capt. Carl E. Walz, lists "Pittman Station" as the site of his current employment (as of 1990, when the post office might still have existed). It's amazing how many people worked at this post office! Here is his entry:

NAME: Carl E. Walz, Captain, USAF, Mission Specialist
BIRTHPLACE Cleveland, Ohio
RESIDENCE: Henderson, Nev.
EDUCATION: Charles T. Brush High School, Lyndhurst, Ohio
BS, Physics, Kent State, 1977
MS, Physics, John Carroll Univ., 1979
CURRENT POSITION: Flight Test Program Manager
Air Force Flight Test Center
Pittman Station, Nevada

The implication, of course, is that Capt. Walz worked at Area 51.

Reader A. Von Retyi ([email protected]) then did a search for "Walz" on the web and came up with a detailed NASA biography on him [original location*]. Walz is scheduled to fly a Space Shuttle mission this summer*. According to the biography, "In July 1987 he was transferred to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he served as a Flight Test Program Manager at Detachment 3, Air Force Flight Test Center."

AFFTC is not listed as a tenant at Nellis on its web page*, suggesting that their entire presence in the Nellis complex is covert.

DR#35 established that AFFTC has a presence at Groom, and now we know that it is Detachment 3 that is housed there. This is consistant with the designation on the cover of the Area 51 Security Manual of "DET 3 SP," with "SP" perhaps referring to "Security Police."

Dragonrider - Las Vegas Review Journal had an article about a strike a few years ago. EG&G security at Area 51 went on strike. Wackenhut patrolled until the strike ended. They wear the same uniform, but EG&G has the Area 51 contract, Wackenhut has NTS. You have to go through NTS to get to Area 51. The Are 51 camo dudes are EG&G.

I cant see what the CIA would have to do with it anymore. They dont do recon anymore like the 50s and 60s; its now a DIA/NRO thing.

I saw this too! This is where I got my question from. On one hand Area 51 is listed as Det 3 of the AFFTC, but at the same time the Air Force says they don't own Area 51, and they refer to it as the Groom Lake Test Site not Groom Lake Air Force base.

The FEMA tie comes in the form of the frequencies being used...it's in their bandwidth range, etc.

Wackenhutt is reportedly a front organization for the CIA

Well, many of the founders are ex-CIA, so this shouldn't come as a big surprise...

There's a difference between owned by and operated by also... The CIA often works under the cover of, and in the guise of, FEMA...and they likely hold the deed, whereas officially, the Air Force testing division operates it.

Funded through the black budget.
Commanded by air force personnell.
Employs private, civillian, army, navy and air force.

I was talking to a kid who used to go to the same batting cages as me and he went to high school in las vegas. One day he said that an air force commander came to talk to the kids about careers and one of the students asked about area 51 and the guy admitted that he worked there, obviously not in those words though.
