On the busiest travel day of the year, a commuter train in a Chicago suburb ripped through a traffic jam. Several cars were set on fire, and 13 people were injured, several critical. The train tracks are embedded in the road for about 100 feet in the area of the accident.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- A commuter train struck several automobiles at a crossing in a Chicago suburb Wednesday, leaving 13 people injured, three critically, a spokeswoman for the transit authority said.

All of the injured were in cars, either involved in the initial wreck or in related crashes, said Judy Pardonnet, a spokeswoman for the Metra commuter rail service.

The cars were trapped when the signal activated, and had nowhere to go. This apparently has been a long time coming in this area. I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often in some cities where there are commuter trains with tracks laid out this way. The sad thing is that this probably isn't the last time this will happen.
