A San Diego Artist and Boutique owner has designed and is now distributing special shoes to assist illegal immigrants in their entry to the United States of America from Mexico. The shoes consist of a mini survival kit which enables illegal immigrants to cross the U.S./Mexico border at night through the use of such items as flashlights, maps and compass.

They are red, white and green, the colors of the Mexican flag. On the back ankle, a drawing of Mexico’s patron saint of migrants.

On this side of the border, the shoes sit in art collections or the closets of well-heeled sneaker cognoscenti. On the other side, in Tijuana, it’s a utilitarian affair: Immigrants to be are happy to have the sturdy, light-weight shoes for the hike — or dash — into the United States.

Their designer is Judi Werthein, an Argentine artist who moved to New York in 1997 — legally, she notes.

On recent evening in Tijuana, after giving away 50 pairs at a migrant shelter, Werthein waved the insole and pointed to Interstate 8, the main road between San Diego and Phoenix.

“This blue line is where you want to go,” Werthein, 38, said in Spanish.

“Good luck! You’re all very courageous,” she told the cheering crowd of about 50 men huddled in a recreation room after dinner.

Frankly I am shocked that this kind of activity would be allowed, at best it could qualify as aiding and abetting a criminal act, at worst, contributing to terrorism. It is bad enough that the U.S. and other countries have to deal with the influx of, frankly, unwanted peoples in their homelands, but to have people publicly assist the crime of illegal immigration and seek positive public recognition for their actions as an "art project" is insane. The press is bound to cover the issue as a 'pop culture' issue, yet the press condemns the actions of loyalist American citizens when they attempt to support the efforts of the unsupported U.S. Border Patrol.

Currently there are no other supporting links on this particular story, but KABC news in Los Angeles carried the story on the 11/17/05 11:00pm broadcast.

It makes sense once you read the entire article it states within the body that she had given away 50 pair in Tijuana recently.

Nice find of this story it is sad to see that people in the US are actually helping illegals. It is also a good reason to send those that are helping directly to jail.

Those that don't believe assisting illegal immigrants like this "artist" has is a Conspiracy related issue should consider that it is a Conspiracy to Violate the laws of the United States of America.

Conspiracy:
1 a : to join in a secret agreement to do an unlawful or wrongful act or an act which becomes unlawful as a result of the secret agreement
2 : to act in harmony toward a common end

This is complete BS! Whats even worse is the fact that someone put up money for this project

Benefactors put up $40,000 for the project; Werthein gets a $5,000 stipend, plus expenses.

She should be arrested and her citizenship or green card should be refuted and her ass should be sent back to the country she came from. Jesus might as well put in a lighted walking path with big red arrows that say "This way to the US."
