Lax federal cargo security effort leaves New York – America's busiest cargo hub – at particular risk; 22% of passenger flights and virtually 100% of cargo flights in NY airports carry cargo and mail that isn't screened

With the nation's terror alert raised to Code Orange in part because of intelligence indicating that terrorists may be planning to crash cargo planes from Canada and Latin America into US targets, Senator Charles Schumer today released a new analysis of the federal government's efforts to improve cargo security. The analysis revealed that the TSA has so far failed to assume the same security responsibilities for air cargo that it assumed for passenger planes after 9/11 and still doesn't screen cargo shipped on passenger planes. Schumer was joined by several airport security whistle-blowers who detailed security vulnerabilities at the three major New York-area airports.
