NEWS: Colombian Volcano Forces Evacuation of 9,400, page 1

Some 9,400 residents have been evacuated from the area surrounding the Galeras volcano in the southwestern Narino province of Columbia. Galeras has erupted more than 20 times since the 1500's and is currently at danger 'level two', meaning an eruption may happen in a matter of days/weeks. This is the second time this year the area has been evacuated as it was also at level two in May. In 1993 Galeras erupted killing nine people.

``It's necessary to leave the area,'' Interior Minister Sabas Pretelt de la Vega said on the presidential Web site. ``No one should put their life or that of their family at risk,''

This is the second time this year the government has asked people to move out as the volcano spewed clouds of ash and gas. The volcano also was designated level two in May. In 1993 Galeras erupted, killing nine people. Last year ash from the mountain caused several forest fires.

The 4,270-meter high (14,000-foot) Galeras volcano is situated close to the border with Ecuador, six kilometers from the city of Pasto, where about 300,000 people live.

2005 has been a horrific year for natural disasters, we really dont need another one.

At least the Columbian government has taken the correct steps and evacuated the danger area.

If only other governments in certain countries had thought ahead and evacuated.....
