U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice brokered a deal between Israel and the Palestinian Authority that will provide for new border crossing rules as well as the construction of a Gaza Strip seaport, to provide new trade opportunites for Palestine. The deal is expected to improve the Palestinian economy and help fend off challenge to the current Palestinian government by Hamas terror extremists. The intense negotiations were fruitful after Rice decided to stay an additional night in Israel to complete the talks.

Israeli and Palestinian officials have clinched a long-awaited deal on the manning of the Gaza-Egypt border crossing, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Tuesday, after marathon Israeli-Palestinian talks through the night and well into Tuesday morning.

Rice praised the deal as a "big step forward" in strained Israeli-Palestinian relations. She personally presided over the final rounds of talks.

Under the deal, the border would tentatively open November 25, and construction of a Gaza seaport would begin.

Condi Rice has really shown herself to be a great Secretary of State in the last few months. Hopefully, this deal will do a lot to bring about mideast peace and provide a vibrant homeland for the Palestinians.

Now we just need to talk her into running for President in 2008.

I wonder if CondiLiar Rice mentioned the increasingly egregious and illegal building of all those zionist apartheid West Bank settlements that keep the Palestinians hemmed in bunta style on their own land in her socalled "negotiations"...?>?

Since she mentioned "Rafah" as being a possible trading nexus with the outside world (being near the Egyptian border), I wonder if she would have the guts to mention the Israeli IDF human bulldozing (and re-buildozing) of the Olympia Washington peace Activist Rachel Corrie in Rafah on March 16 2003?

Or maybe she didn't have the guts. She was probably too busy making a deal to free Jonathan Pollard....or at least listening to Sharon whine for another hour about him...again!

For the first time in history, Palestinians were given control over the Gaza Strip crossings

  • The Kerem Shalom crossing will be used for the passage of vehicles and goods. Palestinian customs officials will be stationed at the Kerem Shalom crossing between Israel and Gaza, with Israeli inspection of goods passing through

  • According to the agreement, Israel will be provided a video feed from the Rafah Crossing, and any dispute that arises over the passage of an individual into Gaza will be settled by European monitors stationed at the border.

The European observers will have the final decision in the event of a dispute over passage for persons Israel deems suspicious and the Palestinian Authority believes should be allowed to cross. Only Palestinians holding PA identity cards will be allowed to enter and exit through the crossing.

The target opening date for the Rafah Crossing is November 25th.

MK Binyamin Netanyahu expressed concern about the agreement, saying that it constitutes a danger to Israel.

"The result is easy to see," Netanyahu claimed. "There will be plenty of weapons finding their way to Gaza. Kassam rockets and mortars will be transported through Judea and Samaria to be launched at Israel." (source)

and an IDF Intelligence officer also says that there are warnings and threats to Israel's security

"The sticking points in our negotiations on the Rafah crossing are meaningful and important. With all respect to the Egyptians and the Palestinians, we can only trust ourselves, even if there are some European monitoring the place – he won't jump on Muhammad the minute he crosses and arrest him there. He won't even know who Muhammad is," (source)

  • Israel also said that by the end of the year it would allow at least 150 daily truckloads of cargo to be exported from Gaza through the Karni Crossing into Israel, up from the 35 truckloads a day that crossed before Israel pulled out from Gaza. At least 400 daily truckloads will be allowed to pass by the end of 2006.

Also, the deal will include the safe passageway between Gaza and the West Bank and easing restrictions on the Palestinian population, including the removal of no less than 125 checkpoints in the West Bank. Gazan Arabs will also be permitted to travel between the GazaStrip and the Westbank in bus convoys.

Not just a little biased are we???? hmmmm? If the Palestinian
terrorists and Hammas would actually agree to get along with
people, instead of blowing them up and declaring that they
can't EVER allow Israel to exhist ... perhaps there wouldn't
be all these severe security measures in place to PROTECT
Israel (a soverign UN recognized nation - which Palestine isn't).

Israeli IDF human bulldozing ... of the Olympia
Washington peace Activist Rachel Corrie

Come now NEOAMADEUS .. you have been educated about
Corrie on a previous thread. She wasn't a peace activist.
She was an idiot who flew to the other side of the planet,
into a hostile situation, sat in front of a bulldozer, refused
to obey the law, and egotistically expected the bulldozer
to stop because SHE was there.

It's the 2003 Darwin Award for her!

She is a strong person.

James Wolfensohn (a special Middle East envoy of the international peacemaking group known as "The Quartet" ) was expressing frustration and said, that he was ready to quit during the negotiatins.

(EU Foreign policy chief Javier Solana, Condoleezza Rice, James Wolfensohn during a press conference in Jerusalem on Tuesday)

But Condoleezza Rice rearranged her schedule, and staying an extra day - her 51. birthday - in Jerusalem, she has brokered the deal.

The deal gives a much needed boost to a shattered Gaza economy. Along with the opening the Gaza Strip's borders to the world, the construction of the Gaza seaport would provide necessary jobs to jobless Gazans.

Israeli companies are at the leading edge of image processing - with systems for matching faces captured on video against stored images....But let's hope this agreement will be no threat to Israel's security.

Hey Flyers Fan:

I wonder what "award" we should give that miserable torah-abiding IDF Israeli momma's boy who bulldozed over Rachel Corrie not once, but TWICE, requiring the USA made Caterpillar to be placed in REVERSE...even after he heard her scream repeatedly, "Stop !! Stop !! My Back is Broken, for God's Sake STOP!!!!" in front of more than 5 witnesses.

And yet the American cheques keep on coming to Tel-Aviv. Imagine if that were a Syrian bulldozer, well, well well !!!

Maybe we should erect a statue in his honour, right next to Dr. RABBI Baruch Goldstein and that handy dandy Amalekite Killing Machine Gun of his, with an appropriate subtitilus for the both of them , e.g. 'Ossim ("doers") of the Torah of Yahweh '

after all their "holy" motto is straight from the "holy" book itself: "Leave Nothing Alive that Breathes !!

And you defend this kind of thing I suppose. Way to go !

Just a short sidenote

have you ever seen a Dooby - a Caterpillar D9 that was modified by the IDF and Israeli Defense Industries to increase the survivability of the dozer in hostile environments and enable it to withstand heavy attacks?

These are armored bulldozers. The driver’s visibility is severely restricted and he can't hear someone screaming.

Rachel Corrie was not run over by the dooby. She was struck by a falling pile of dirt and rock. If she had been run over by the gigantic machine, there would have been nothing left resembling a human body.

God help us if that inept liar ever became President! Her lying before congress alone should preclude her from even considering such a thing but I am sure that with people like djohnsto77 ignoring displays of such blatant arrogance and disregard for the American people's right to hear the truth from they're elected officials she may just have enough votes to make a go of stealing her election like her mentor did.

Could a presidential candidate really be considered if she was shopping for shoes and seeing shows while New Orleans held it's collective breath? Absolutely shameful.

Back to the topic...
There will never be permanent peace in that area until one of these groups is gone for good. Hard to hear but it's the truth.

And is this really a good thing if one of the prophesies of the "end times" states there needs to be a peace in that area before the apocalypse? Let's just hope the peace she "brokered" isn't "seven years" and coupled with "prosperity". Oh wait. There is a piece to the puzzle that involves trade.... Scary.....but strangely apropos.

I do so love a good Armageddon scenario....

You should hear yourself "write" sometimes...

The driver can't hear someone screaming?

Are you nuts?

So they can run over civilians without censure because...."sorry....ummm...we can't hear the civilians screaming when we run over them....so it's ok !!"

You really need to crawl out from under that rock of yours....and soon too. Your posts are getting most tiresome to thinking people who are more in touch with the facts of these matters.

NEOAMADEUS, you will not post inflammatory remarks like that on ATS at all, especially not in the news forum. Consider that official notice to talk in a civilized manner.

Yes, that is right.

Not to mention that its immpossible to be run over by a slow moving bulldozer while you are looking right at it. Unless you're like, an idiot. Her standing there protesting and then having debris crush her seems far more realistic. Its plainly obvious that, if a school bush driver needs a retractable arm to swing out from a bus to keep the kids within viewing distance, that that machine also has no visibility for whats right in front of it.

BUT, there was no one monitoring the machine while it was in operation?

Ah but Ngdan....

The FIVE eye-witnesses taking COLOUR pictures of the event show that the driver COULD INDEED see her and they will testify in court that it was DELIBERATE ACT...

So wait for the case to come up...

I hope you don't think the family of Rachel Corrie is just going to sit there like inky little slaggers and do nothing just because the Sharon government tried to throw money at them....

I had no idea that pictures taken from the ground, color or otherwise, could prove what someone at a different eye level and vantage point could see.

Ah well, you learn something new every day I guess.

Today, European Union foreign ministers gave their formal approval to launch a mission to monitor the border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. The E.U. monitors will act as mediators between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

The E.U. will send a first contingent of 12 officers and experts later this week to the PA-controlled outpost to prepare for the official start of their mission Friday, when the Rafah border crossing opens.

There are still some problems...:

The Agreed Principles for Rafah Crossing - General Agreement says:

" A liaison office, led by the 3rd party, will receive real-time video and data feed of the activities at Rafah and will meet regularly to review implementation of this agreement, resolve any disputes arising from this agreement, and perform other tasks specified in this agreement."

But the PA- director of borders and crossings, Salim Abu Safiyyeh, asserted that there won't be any live video streams to the Israeli side via the surveillance cameras installed in Rafah terminal, pointing out that even the joint control room will not receive these live feeds, and will be only for the presence of the third party that will monitor the borders.
