When I think of "nationalist" countries, France always comes to mind. It's no secret that the French are extremely nationalistic. They staunchly defend their language and it's proper grammar and pronunciation. And the fact that the French government has historically shown a great difficulty in assimilating citizens who might not be French by heritage. This is most acutely evidenced by the recent rioting.

France will most assuredly have to change their society to incorporate their "multinational" citizens. As such, does this mean French Nationalism is now dead? More so, does this herald the death of nationalism the world over?

Here in the UK things have gone the other way and it is as if we have to be ashamed to be British, which no one will ever force me to be.

A recent example of the lunatic fringe was where certain uk councils banned the flying of the cross of St George from taxi's etc on St Georges day or in support of the England football team as it was offensive to 'non-English' people here.

What makes it much much worse however is the way that this goes hand in hand with the bending over backwards they do to accomodate other cultures. This accomodation of other cultures in itself is perfectly fine but they need to remember that the English have a culture too.
