Oh man, it gets better and better...

Glitter "pays money to accusers"

Former singer Gary Glitter paid $2,000 each to the families of two Vietnamese girls he is accused of sexually abusing, his lawyer has said.

news.bbc.co.uk...

Unfortunately it's not uncommon in SEAsia to pay "compensation" to the victims to have charges dropped for various crimes. I know in my part of the SEAsia a percentage, sometimes quite high, of that "compensation" will go to the cops who negotiate the deal.

There is a growing movement (in Cambodia at least) to have this idea done away with. The argument being that the law is the law and "do the crime, do the time". What makes it disgusting is that the people who are given the compensation (relatives of victims usually) are generally very needy and have little choice, however, the crimes are usually committed by the high-ranking and powerful (and therefore corrupt and rich) and the sums they offer are a pitiful insult.

The charges that have finally been laid could get him between 3 and 7 years. But that money he spent didn't go astray, the girls have appealed for clemency for the ba$tard.

Charges laid at last

Trial date set

He's been enjoying the hospitality of the Communist Party since his arrest, I hope they offer to host him for a long time to come...

Hmm, gotcha, maybe.

Glitter was in court yesterday, his verdict in Vietnam's famous one-day-trial judicial system is due today, 10am local (VN) time.

His latest excuse was that he was teaching the girls English and yes, one of them did sleep in his room, but only because she was afraid of ghosts (and, presumably, needed a reassuring hug from a grandfather-type figure).

One Day Trials R Us!

Anybody else not really having a problem with the idea of a one-day trial here?
