according to the BCC radio news - a patient diagnosed as HIV positive has been diagnosed as " clear " - despite recieving no treatments

the how and why is still very speculative - i guess the accuracy of both tests will be investigated rigorously

can HIV tests give false pos or fals neg ??????????

finally - heres the link :

BBC_NEWS

i am not sure is this will have any impact on anyone else - unless it turns out that this guy has an antibody that can be replicated - and used as the bsis of a vaccine

Some valid questions and a good many answers.

AIDS Test 'Is Not Proof Of Infection'

AIDS: Scientific or Viral Catastrophe? What are we really dealing with?

AIDS: 'No Gold Standard' For HIV Testing Why is the testing so totally unreliable?

Multivitamins Slow AIDS Effect in Study. A disease or just people dying or hunger and general poverty?

Top 100 AIDS Science Inconsistencies. Can we give anyone toxic drugs when there is so many flaws with the diagnosis? Is the principle not to first do no harm?

What really causes aids? Wich is in my opinion a perfectly valid question considering where i come from and how my argument have seen fit to act so far.

This should help you on your way and for any other health issues this site is very very usefull.

Actually there can be parallel threads on both ATSNN and ATS.

As I stated int he news article, it is possible that this guys immune system has dropped the HIV level below that which is detectable with routine testing. It may still be there and he may still be able to pass it on.

I realize this, but I was saying after that that it might help the discussion a little bit.

Remeber Magic Johnson? in November 1991 he announced that he had contracted HIV.

Though recent reports show the HIV levels inside of Magic Johnson are "undetectable"

Link

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Powerful drugs have reduced the AIDS virus in Magic Johnson's body to undetectable levels, his doctors said Friday.

''Earvin is doing very well,'' Drs. David Ho and Michael Mellman said in a statement. ''However, we must emphasize that 'undetectable' doesn't equal 'absent.' It would be premature and incorrect to say Earvin is 'virus-free.'''

The doctors added: ''We are very pleased he has adhered to his daily drug regimen and that is reflected in his good health.''

Thousands of HIV patients have also seen their infections recede to undetectable levels after taking drug ''cocktails'' containing protease inhibitors, approved last year by the Food and Drug Administration.

A patient with undetectable virus levels can still infect others. Even if the virus is undetected in blood or semen, it can be present in other areas, such as the intestines.

Could HIV be weaker than some experts claim?

It seems if you are rich and famous your chances are much better.

What are the chances of this guy's first test the one that said he was HIV positive in the first place was a false positive?

People have done alot stupider things in the Medical field then mess up the results of a HIV test.

It seems they can

False positives most often result from volunteers in HIV vaccine studies, clerical error, contaminated specimens, or misinterpretation of the results.

Human error can mess up even the best test

There is a very, very small chance that a Western Blot result is incorrect. False negatives usually happen when people test during the window period. In low-risk groups, a false negative Western Blot result occurs 0.001 percent of the time. False positives occur even less frequently — 0.00001 percent

this case seems very uncertain to me, because this hasn't been medically confirmed. In fact this is rare but does happen. It is often called Equivocal HIV. Usually they test negative though but he could have tested positive and then negative. the process is really poorly understood but of serious intest to researchers, obviously.
