Several Australian MP's believe that its time the Australian national anthem, "Advance Australia Fair", reflected Australia's Christian values. The Australian national anthem does not have any mention of 'God' in it unlike Britian, New Zealand and the United States. The "importance of God" and Australia's Christian foundations deserved to be recognised in the national anthem said Liberal MP Peter Slipper.

A PUSH is under way to insert a reference to God in Australia's national anthem.

Several federal MPs say it is time that Advance Australia Fair was amended to reflect the nation's Christian values.

Our national song does not mention God, unlike the anthems of New Zealand, the US and the UK.

Liberal MP Peter Slipper told Federal Parliament the "importance of God" and Australia's Christian foundations deserved to be recognised in the national anthem.

This is a joke if you ask me. We have Peter Costello whinging about Shariah law and how Australia will never be a muslim country and then we have Christian zealots such as Peter Slipper wanting to amend our national athem to include 'God'.

I'm not a Christian and I do not believe in God and I am not a small minority either. God has no part in the national identity of Australia and things are fine the way they are.

I respect people's right to believe in God and as such my right to NOT believe in God should be equally respected. I shouldnt be forced to sing or mention anything about God whilst singing the national anthem or pledging allegiance to Australia and her laws.

Also think about how much money it would cost to change the anthem. Its just a joke and is insulting to muslims who our national leaders have chastised for being overtly religious. I hope this topic gets the lack of attention and support it deserves.

You want God in the anthem? Go move to the friggen Vatican! Thats about how it goes for muslims and Shariah law right?

How dare they even consider it. Who voted for these idiots anyway. Church and state once again crossing boundaries. Next they will be pushing to make christian scriptures a part of the education curriculum again.....

If it hasn't already it most certainly is on it's way, starting with Australia

My opinion on this echo's those who have posted already. The nerve ...
I also hope this doesn't get the attention these imbeciles are hoping it will.

Interesting mention of it maybe being illegal, is someone able to elaborate on this ?

Advanced Australia Fair
Updated Lyrics

Mark Weeks, Potts Point, N.S.W.

c. September 1996

Australians all, we've lost our voice,
For we are old and tired;
We've ceased our toil and sold our soil;
Our credit has expired.
We can't afford to pay our board,
And so we say this prayer

On bended knees. Will someone please
Advance Australia's fare.

As if this will take.

Most Australian's don't even know the damn anthem. 90% of the population was stunned at the 2000 Syndey Olympics to learn that it even has a 2nd and 3rd verse!

Yeah, adding Christian over-tones to it will be a real boost!

They have probably been trying to forget how it goes, as I have been the last few years

I am 100% certain that the Aus national anthem has two verses not three. Where did you get that from?

yes, it was altered, the official version goes like this ....

~clears throat~ ahem;

The full version with additional verses:

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"

When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Till he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;
With all her faults we love her still,
"Brittannia rules the wave!"
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

While other nations of the globe
Behold us from afar,
We'll rise to high renown and shine
Like our glorious southern star;
From England, Scotia, Erin's Isle,
Who come our lot to share,
Let all combine with heart and hand
To advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

Shou'd foreign foe e'er sight our coast,
Or dare a foot to land,
We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore
To guard our native strand;
Brittannia then shall surely know,
Beyond wide ocean's roll,
Her sons in fair Australia's land
Still keep a British soul.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

however I like the updated version I posted above

We've ceased our toil and sold our soil;
Our credit has expired.

And so we say this prayer

Unlike all the Australians here, I don't see a problem with it, but it's your decison.

But a correction, or at least clarification: The U.S. National Anthem doesn't have a reference to God in it until the fourth verse (no one knows the second, let alone the fourth -- we just use the first). Our Pledge has a prominant place for God as does our national motto which appears on all our money, but God really isn't in the anthem:

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

The dreaded 4th verse that dares to include God:

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

I think the anthem is fine the way it is... I doubt it will change though, its just a couple of whacky christian MPs thinking that their way is the right way and that they will have support... no chance!

The problem with it is that if we included "Australia DOESNT trust in God" in the athem there would be an uproar, and rightly so. Why? Because that would be atheists forcing their belief on Christians which is not fair. Conversely its not fair to label Australia a Christian country when millions of Australians are not Christian. If its just a little word without much meaning then there is no need to include it in the anthem.

if you never had it in there in the first place why amend it? but by the same token the US has had it in our national anthem yet people want to remove it, isnt this a bit of hypocrisy?

I would in all seriousness have to resort to terrorism should this come into effect.

Imagine that, a white middle class third generation Australian rebeling against the dominant faith.....

I suppose it has to be mentioned that whilst the English National Anthem (God Save our Queen) does mention God, it is more of a homage to Her Maj than to him upstairs. And the UK isn't overtly religious either, in fact, many of us think of churches as museum peices and pretty buildings, rather than Places of Worship.

It also must be said that the UK doesn't have an Anthem, although when we take on our alias of Great Britain in the Olympics et al, we do sing "God Save the Queen", but that is really just a default and not the actual British anthem.

Apparently, those funny hairy guys with skirts up north and the wierd, sheep loving chaps to the west not only have their own Parliaments now, but do have their own Anthems.

I know it is hard to grasp, but the Provincial ruffians like to think of themselves as "independant" and don't like to be lumped with us English.

Not sure why....we're obviously so much better then they.....

The only 'god' that should be in any Australian national anthem is God Save The Queen.

The anthem works we shouldnt change it, a waste of time.
