Always really wanted to get into it, but the price of equipment has been a serious barrier. been to ham radio dot co dot uk and its looking like 300 quid to get started.
Has anyone any advice for a newbie who wants to get into operating radios as a hobby and generally for having a good time?

Have you tried private sellers? Or EBay? You might find stuff like this at pawn shops too.

Try to find a used rig. My dad purchaced me a HT. Get into contact with other local operators too - sometimes they have rigs lying around that they wouldn't mind selling for not a lot of money to help out someone who is new to the hobby.
