An international row over newspaper cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad gathered pace on Thursday as more European dailies printed Danish caricatures of him and Muslims stepped up pressure to stop them.

The owner of France Soir, a Paris daily that reprinted them on Wednesday along with one German and two Spanish papers, sacked its managing editor to show "a strong sign of respect for the beliefs and intimate convictions of every individual".

But the tabloid staunchly defended its right to print the cartoons. Switzerland's Le Temps and La Tribune de Geneve ran some of them on Thursday, as did Magyar Hirlap in Budapest. Some European dailies ran cartoons making fun of the controversy.

Danish police said on Wednesday they had told the country's imams they were "highly aware of the risks of an escalation of the case, including the calls to burn the Koran, which these days flourish on the Internet and via SMS (phone messages)".

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

It looks like SOME Newspapers/Tabloids, are not watching what is going on, like in Switzerland and Hungary.

And whats troubeling is the last Paragraph, said by the Danish police, stating that this Case could Escalate into something bigger...

Why Norway haven't expelled this 'Norways answer to Imam Laban', is beyond my understanding/tolerance.

He is continuously conspiring of high-treason to the norwegian democratic monarchy. OUT, I say!

"-If the dansih or the norwegian government are sorry, or not, doesn't mean anything. This is an declaration of war."

"The war has begun." He continues.

Here´s the story. Free speech is one thing, but what about truth? Is this the reason why they shut down embassies, boycotting Danish goods and are ready to bomb Denmark? Why is this man saying one thing in Denmark (public on television) and then he say the complete opposite on Al Jazeera?

The Counterterrorism Blog: Fabricated cartoons worsened Danish controversy

February 02, 2006

However, the Danish Muslim delegation showed much more than the 12 cartoons published by Jyllands Posten. In the booklet it presented during its tour of the Middle East, the delegation included other cartoons of Mohammed that were highly offensive, including one where the Prophet has a pig face. But these additional pictures were NOT published by the newspaper, but were completely fabricated by the delegation and inserted in the booklet (which has been obtained and made available to me by Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet). The delegation has claimed that the differentiation was made to their interlocutors, even though the claim has not been independently verified. In any case, the action was a deliberate malicious and irresponsible deed carried out by a notorious Islamist who in another situation had said that “mockery against Mohamed deserves death penalty.” And in a quintessential exercise in taqiya, Abu Laban has praised the boycott of Danish goods on al Jazeera, while condemning it on Danish TV.

The Al-Aksa Martyrs’ Brigades (affiliated with Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party) who shut down the European Union's office on Thursday gave an 8:00 pm deadline for European governments to apologize for the publication of a cartoon depicting Muhammed in a Danish newspaper.

After that time, said a terrorist, “any citizens of these countries who are present in Gaza will put themselves in danger”. European doctors and other nationals would become targets for attack, according to a report on Channel 2.

This deadline ended half an hour ago; no EU government apologized.

Foreign diplomats and journalists began pulling out of the Palestinian areas and the European Union closed down its offices in Gaza City and ordered its staff to leave the city out of fear for their lives.

Spain, Germany, Hungary, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Italy - have printed the cartoons, often as a gesture in defence of free speech - The BBC today showed the images on today's One O'Clock News bulletin and on the News 24 channel; no other British news organisation had previously shown the cartoons.

Al- Jazeera news network just reported that a German citizen was kidnapped in Nablus this evening in response to the printing of caricatures of the Islamic prophet Mohammed in some European newspapers.

UPDATE:

PA police found the four kidnappers and the German, arrested two of the gunmen and freed the hostage. The whole incident lasted less than an hour.

Sorry in advance for the messy post, it was from an e-mail that was being circulated lately. Apparently from an atricle in a British newspaper.

I find that it is relevant to the discussion and i'm not going to read all the T&C's for posting rules etc etc (yes, freedom of speech in certain forms is prohibited on ATS )

So anyways, here we go...

>>Story in a National Newspaper

>>Will we still be the Country of choice and still be Gt Britain if
>>we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from
>>other countries that came to live in Britain because it is the
>>Country of Choice??????
>>Think about it . .
>>All I have to say is, when will they do something about MY RIGHTS?
>>I celebrate Christmas, but because it isn't celebrated by everyone,
>>we can no longer say Merry Christmas. Now it has to be Season's
>>Greetings. It's not Christmas holiday, it's Winter Break. Isn't it
>>amazing how this winter break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas

>>holiday? We've gone so far the other way, bent over backwards to
>>not offend anyone, that I am now being offended. But it seems that
>>no one has a problem with that.
>>This says it all!
>>This is an editorial written by an
>>British citizen, published in a
>>National newspaper He did quite a job; didn't he? Read on, please!
>>IMMIGRANTS,
>>NOT BRITS MUST ADAPT.
>>I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we
>>are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist
>>attacks on the 7th of the 7th we have experienced a surge
>>in patriotism by the majority
>>of Brits. However, the disgust about the attacks had
>>barely settled when the "politically correct! " crowd began
>>complaining about
>>the possibility
that our patriotism was offending others.
>>I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone
>>who is seeking a better life by coming to Britain, Our population
>>is almost entirely made up of descendants of immigrants. (The
>>Danes, Romans ect.) However, there
>>are a few things that those
>>who have recently come to
>>our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand.
>>This idea of the Brits being a
>>multicultural community
>>has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national
>>identity. As Britain's we
>>have our own culture, our
>>own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture
>>has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and
>>victories by millions of men and women who
have sought freedom.
>>We speak ENGLISH, not Indian, Urdu, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese,
>>Russian, or any other language
>>Therefore, if you wish to become part
>>of our society, learn the language!
>>"Land of Hope & Glory" is our motto. This is not some Christian,
>>right wing, political slogan We adopted this motto because
>>Christian men and women,
>>on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly
>>documented.
>>It is certainly appropriate to display it
>>on the walls of our schools. If God
>>offends you, then I suggest you
>>consider another part of the world as
>>your new home, because God is part
>>of our culture.
>>If the 'Union Jack' flag offends you, or
>>you don't like our QUEEN, then
you
>>should seriously consider a move
>>to another part of this planet. We
>>are happy with our culture and have
>>no desire to change, and we really
>>don't care how you did things where
>>you came from. This is
>>OUR COUNTRY,
>>our land, and our lifestyle. Our Laws give every citizen the
>>right to express his opinion and we
>>will allow you every opportunity to do so!
>>But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our
>>flag,
>>our lifestyle our government, or our
>>way of life, I highly encourage you
>>take advantage of one other great BRITISH freedom,
>>THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.

I found this to be a very thought provoking e-mail, and i'm glad someone decided to publish this article, as it tells it like it is

But who is to set the boundaries on what is acceptable, you, me, John Kerry, George Bush? The whole point of free speech is then defeated. This is what these islamic fanactics want. You can say whatever bad things about Christianity, Judaism, Hundusism, etc....but you can't say anything about islam. Basically, they want you to shut your pie hole unless it's about someone else, or in their favor.

first you cannot say any criticism about Judaism and Israel , for example in the western world you cannot deny the right of Israel to exist nor you can say that the Jewish temple never existed. and both of these things are directly related to Judaism religion.
The boundaries from my point of view are:

1) Fairness & Equality :

you have to treat all religions equally , either you prohibit offending all religions or you allow offending them all equally.

Israel Shamir's Publisher Jailed And Fined In France

On Wednesday, the court in Nanterre sentenced the publiser of "Al Qalam" books to three months in prison and $10,000 euro fine for publishing an "anti Semitic" book by Israel Shamir entitled "The Other Face of Israel." He also prohibited the sale of this book.

The court convicted Abdelila Cherifi Alaoui, of "inciting discrimination and encouraging hate and violence" against another religion.

In addition to the jail term and fine, Al Qalam must pay 12,000 euros damages and 1,500 euros in legal costs to the "International League Against Racism and Anti Semitism."

Finally, the publisher has 30 days to withdraw copies from stores with a penalty for 100 euros for every book remaining after the 30 days.

The Court was motivated by the fact that Shamir always refers to the "Jews" and presents them as dominating the world, as well as being engaged in fomenting a "thrid world war."

The writer is christian:

The author who is a Jew who converted to Christianity is accused of being in the mainstream of the anti-Semitic tradition, especially by referring to the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" as a (genuine) "political statement."

2) Respect to other parties :

I believe that under freespeech it is necessary to respect others' race, religion, sex. To avoid any racist , anti-religion or sexist talk that could spread hatred between different parties.
Do these things sound familiar? don’t you have rules in your countries similar to these?
