Tim Louis, COPE City Councilor, is asking that a city-owned brothel to be opened to help women trapped in the sex trade.

Vancouver's ruling civic party is putting some distance between itself and the comments of one of its candidates.

COPE City Councillor Tim Louis told The Vancouver Sun he's in favour of opening a city-owned brothel to help women trapped in the sex trade.

The comments came out of a meeting between Louis and members of the Vancouver Sun editorial board. Thursday morning they were splashed across the paper in a bold headline.

COPE says Louis was expressing a personal opinion – and not party policy.

The mayor also thinks that the best way to help these women is to break their addictions and put a roof over their heads.

I'd have to agree. These women are victims of the illegal sex trade and need help.

Cool, I'll go to Vancouver on my next vacation!

J/K

Why don't they train these women to get normal jobs instead of opening their own state-owned brothel? I think that would be the better solution.

Honestly I don't know why he wants a brothel for these women. In Canada prostitution is legal but you can not solicit in the streets.

I just re-read my original post and I didn't clarify that the Mayor does not support the brothel aspect of this idea.

I don't know how many legal prostitutes there are in Vancouver, but I know in my yellow pages there are more adds for escorts than pizza delivery.

The women in the article are drug addicted street prostitutes. They prostitute for drugs. Giving them a brothel probably wont help them since they probably don't want to be prostitutes anyway.

A better solution would be to build a center for these women where they can stay and get off the drugs and be trained for other work.

Bingo, that's what is the heart of street prostitutes. I have no problem with prostitution but the street trade is for, well, crack whores. Everyone has heard the term. These girls need help and prostitution is not the problem, their addiction and the mentallity that goes along with it is.
