RFID Tags: Big Brother in Small Packages?

This is an article I found by mistake and wished I hadent in a way, to think that "George Orwell" was right is frightening in some retrospect!


The genetic name for this technology is RFID, which stands for "Radio Frequency Identification". RFID tags are miniscule mircrochips, which already have shrunk to half the size of a grain of sand. They listern for a radio query and respond by transmitting their unique ID code. Most RFID tags have no batteries. They use power from the initial radio signal to transmit their response.

Imagine a world where every street corner is dotted with disposable microcameras, equiped with face-recognition software that identifies pedestrians and constantly updates their individual files with up-to-the-minute location information. (wearing masks wont help: Many states already have antimask laws, and the rest of the world follow suit if masks became sufficiently popular). The microcameras are linked through a network modeled on existing 802.11 wireless technology. The wireless mesh also includes cameras devoted to spotting and recording license plates and a third type that identifies people by the way they walk.

The goal of the Human Identification at a Distance program is to develop automated biometric identification technologies to detect, recognize and identify threats at great distances. These technologies will provide critical early warning support for force protection and homeland defense against terrorist threats, and will prvent or decrease the success rate of such attacks against DoD operational facilities and installations.
