As many as 1000 Exxon-Mobil employees attending a company sponsored health fair, were apparently injected with purified water when they thought they were getting flu vaccines. The owner of Comfort & Caring Home Health has been charged with Medicare fraud for shots given to the ederly at a home on another occassion, while the investigation into the Exxon health fair continues. The Exxon-Mobil health fair flu shots were reported by a nurse hired to assist in administering them.

Preliminary tests indicated the syringes were filled with purified water, U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg said. And no ill effects from the shots were reported.

But Hermina Palacio, head of the Harris County health department, recommended that people who received the shots get tested for blood-borne pathogens such as the AIDS virus and hepatitis B and C.

Exxon Mobil offered blood tests and counseling to the employees who received the shots at a health fair Oct. 19-20 at the oil company's complex of refineries and chemical plants in Baytown, just east of Houston.

This is a bizarre incident that raises many concerns.

A coporate sponsor the size of Exxon-Mobil should certainly be able to provide contractors for a health fair that would be beyond reproach. It seems that there is some question as to the caliber of the employees hired to administer the shots too, from the finger pricking incident and the infectious disease concerns being raised over all this.

I suspect it was only the size of this event and the fact that they had to hire additional help, one of which obviously had some sense of decency, that even led to an investigation of this company. How pervasive is this problem? How would we know?

Yep. Good find. And it does make you wonder. If they don't get you on purpose, they mess you up through sheer incompetence and ill-conceived studies.

``

this info would be useful in the thread

OP/ED: Why the recent Anti Corporation sentiment?
www.abovetopsecret.com...

sheeze, the Int'l Corps. have legally pilfered many an employees retirement $$
...by raiding the 'monitored' 'approved' Pension Funds they control

the Corps. & others, have reniged on the health-care promises to their current employees & made co-pay requirements too high for many retirees
(with their decreased retirement nestegg) to keep the health policies active

SO....it doesn't surprise me none.....
that the profit greedy Corps. would engage unethical subcontractors
to distribute flu shots.
now there is a larger mess to rectify.....with all the AIDS & blood borne hepititus & infections & diseases that the group of EXXON employees needs to be screened for.

meanwhile Exxon will do their part- i.e. wash their hands like Pontius Pilate !

You also have to wonder though.... How many of those people injected with water bragged to all their sick counterparts, that they werent touched by the flu because they received their vaccine
On the other hand you would DEFINATELY think, that exxon mobile could do better for funding their medical care other than the government...

you need to fix this for spelling:

A coporate sponsor the size of Exxon-Mobil

good article though.

And government testing doesn't still occur.......it's just corporate now....where the most skilled legal professionals are employed.

What a horrible example of current abuse of authority....

Why is everyone so quick to blame Exxon for this? Might it have something to do with their recent record profits? You need more information before blaming Exxon over this. In most companies it is the health insurence provider who arranges for things like flu shots, health screenings, etc. Exxon might have been scammed same as their employees. I am surprised that there is no certification through the local Health Department of flu shot providers. In Pittsburgh there are more stringent requirements for diaper services than there are for flu shots. All that is required is a licensed nurse to SUPERVISE the administering of the shots. There are no certifications for the vaccine itself.

I have to wonder as well, how many people who got the shots complained of flu symptoms because of the shots or how many actually got the flu. Many drug studies use purified water as a placebo for the control group just to obtain information like this.

From my point of view it doesn't matter whether or not Exxon is directly to blame for this lapse. What matters is that if a major entity like Exxon could have this occur on such a scale, what confidence can any of us have?

Heh, $10 billion in third quarter profits, and Aquafina being called a flu shot. Damn, they really do screw us one way or the other, don't they?

Such interesting times we live in...

You are absolutely correct. The problem is that it is the job of the FDA, State Board of Health and the local Board of Health to be on the look out for these things. With all of the other places that government sticks it's nose into this should never be allowed to happen. I still don't see where it is Exxon's fault they were duped as well.
