FBI Papers Point Out Intelligence Violations (moved from ATSNN), page 1

An FOIA lawsuit filed by the Electronic Privacy Information Center shows that the FBI has misused surveillance for some of their investigations, including surveillance on some US residents for as long as 18 months without the proper paperwork or management.

Previously classified documents being released Monday show numerous misuses of FBI surveillance, including improper searches and seizures of e-mails and bank records, The Washington Post reported in Monday's editions.

The documents, which were turned over under a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by the Electronic Privacy Information Center, show that FBI auditors have investigated hundreds of potential violations related to the agency's domestic surveillance since Sept. 11, 2001, the Post said.

And, if they're not reprimanded or this isn't brought out further into the light, they will continue to do so until it becomes "the norm".

It's one thing to put laws into place regarding this stuff, but when those laws are put into place, they must also be followed up and acted upon, for if they aren't then the laws become useless and are abused.

I think every agent that violated these laws, whatever they may have been, needs to be punished to the fullest extent allowed by law, for if they aren't then other agents will continue to do the same.

However, I believe like many things in our government, this will just be swept under the carpet and disappear and the violations will continue to go on.
