WASHINGTON -- An unidentified man claiming to have a suspicious device in his car near the U.S. Capitol is now in police custody, but several streets in the area are cordoned off.

Brian Doyle, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, said teams were dispatched to the site, although a spokesman for D.C. Fire and EMS said they're not involved.

The U.S. Capitol Police said the man was in the 100 block of First Street, Northwest.

There were no immediate details available on how the suspicious vehicle came to the attention of police.

What could this be about? Was this a bomb or only a hoax? The fact that streets are blocked off might suggest that there is a bomb. It is good to see that Homeland Security is right on top of this.

This story is breaking and new information will be posted as it is reported.

Here is more on the story from ABC7 in washington

Two unidentified men who claimed to have a suspicious device in their car were taken into custody close to the Capitol on Friday, and police cordoned off several streets as a precaution, officials said.

Brian Doyle, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, said hazardous materials teams had been dispatched to the site. "We don't know if it's an explosive device," he said.

There were no immediate details available on how the suspicious vehicle came to the attention of police.

Not to make too much fun of the situation, but the way the reporting is done, it sounds like he went up to a cop and said, "Hey cop! I've got a suspiscious package in my car. Check it out."

I wonder if he actually said bomb or anthrax or something. Seems suspicious for a perp to call his own package suspiscious.

The whole thing just feels so...

what's the word...

wait for it...

suspiscious.

A DC Capolit police officer just gave a news conference and the car is reported to have a package in it.

HazMat teams are now in the process of determining what it contains.

None of the Capitol buildings have been evacuated, however one building the the immediate vacinity of the 2005 Chevy has be evacuated.

They are now going in to disrupt the package and do not want people to be alarmed if they hear an explosion.

They are going to use something called a DSP that in effect disrupts the device with either a gel or water.

The two guys made comments to police to raise concern? What the hell is this? They're either totally nuts or trying to make a distraction....

This is all very strange...

Renting a car in Florida and driving it all the way to Washington D.C. then announcing they have a "suspicious package".

I'm really anticipating how this story ends.

One of the haz mat team is now walking away from the vehicle with what appears to be a detonation cord. The Rental car company is not going to be happy about this car when it goes boom.

The vehicle came to the attention of the police when the two men made "comments that arose officers' suspicions," Officer Jessica Gissubel, a Capitol Police spokeswoman, told WTTG-TV.

Police were examining a gray Chevy Impala near the corner of First Street in Constitution Avenue in connection with the two men. A bomb squad member was seen using a mirror to examine the underside of the car.

"Comments"?

What did they say? "We have a package for President Bush."

Now they are saying the cord may not be a detonation cord but a cord that will control the remote DSP device once it is in place

Whatevers in that car, those two guys are in a whole world of crap. They seem to think on the news that it may just be a hoax, but understandably you have to go through the motions anyway and they seem to be doing that.

I'm not sure about US law in these matters, but they've just said that the laws against hoaxes were changed after 9/11. So if these guys were just goofing about they are going to regret this one for many a day i think.

Well said Sauron, you're right it is a distraction from the probable indictment Libby will get. Who knows, Cheney might get one for good measure.

nbc4.feedroom.com... is suposed to be running a feed on this story. I haven't been able to get it to load though.

I hope we get more background on these two men. So far it sounds like a mentally ill man has made another man drive his rented car a long way for nothing.
