If your like me, and enjoy solving puzzles, you may have noticed a new kind of puzzle in your local newspaper. It is called Sudoku, a number placing puzzle that has become an international phenomenon. The way to solve it is to put single digits in each block so there is one of each digit between 1 and 9 in each row and column, and also one in each 3 by 3 square. It appears simple at first, but requires logic strategies to solve, and is quite challenging.

The immense surge in popularity of Sudoku in British newspapers and internationally has led to it being dubbed in the world media in 2005 variously as "the Rubik’s Cube of the 21st century" or the "fastest growing puzzle in the world".

en.wikipedia.org...

Here is the official website with the rules and hints on solving the puzzles.
www.sudoku.com...

Here is a link to the Internet version of Soduko, where you can generate billions of puzzles.
www.websudoku.com...

The phenomenon has gone beyond just solving the puzzle. Competitions are being held for the fastest Soduko solvers, and now there is a TV show where teams compete against each other. Some people are writing programs to solve the puzzles using the strategies they use to solve them. I just find it ironic, that people are writing programs to solve a puzzle that is computer generated to begin with. But then writing the program to solve a puzzle is a puzzle in of itself.

So give it a try and let me know what you think of it. Hopefully, if you get hooked, it won’t take away from your ATS quality time.

user> What's the matter Hal?

No one is replying to my thread.

user> Well that's probably because people are too busy to work on puzzles.
user> They are probably busy reading other important topics.
user> I see your still calling me Dave. I think your overdue for a defrag.

No...No...Please don't do that. I always feel strange after you do that.

user> Just think, you will be able to solve Sudoku even faster.

Well maybe, but how would you like it if I went Picasso on your brain?

user> Ok, while your waiting for a reply, why don't you check out some other topics.
user> I have to get back to work. I'll see you later.

Alright, so is there anyone else who likes Sudoku?

You don't use math to add or subtract, it works by a process of elimination.

If your interested, there are tips on solving the puzzle @ www.sudoku.com...
Click on the "Tips" link, and that will help you get started.

Then it must make smart people feel dumb.
Thank god, because, I couldn't grasp the concept of where even to begin...

I think there are a lot of people that don't try it because they don't know where to start, but it is pretty easy to get started. It gets difficult when you run out of clues. If anyone is interested, I could do a walk through. Just reply and let me know.

BTW, I like your avatar.

it is just a simple game of Elimination.

And no, it does not make smart people stupid. Smart people think of it as a waste of time.

The prize for solving a game of Soduku is Psudouku

Even though I think your just baiting, I will still bite.

You don't think that solving puzzles helps sharpen the grey matter? Well, my brain could use some sharpening, so I’ll keep working on puzzles and maybe I can rise to your level.

So what do smart people like yourself do to kill time?
