Hilton Hotels which is the parent company to Hampton Hotels is telling Hurricane Katrina evacuees that will have to vacate thier rooms so that the hotel chain can honor upcoming reservations.
This only applies to evacuees who are now outside the state of Louisiana.
Louisiana on September 1st executive order issued by Gov. Kathleen Blanco that bars hotels from displacing a refugee who guarantees payment.

abcnews.go.com
BROOKHAVEN, Miss. Oct 6, 2005 — At least one hotel chain has asked some Hurricane Katrina evacuees to check out so it can honor the reservations of incoming guests.

Hilton Hotels, the parent company of Hampton Inn and other brands, is trying to find other rooms for the evacuees but said they were warned when they checked in that their stays would be limited by room availability, said Hilton spokeswoman Kathy Shepard.

"We're doing our very best to accommodate these people," she said.
It's an uncomfortable situation for the hotel industry: risk bad publicity for kicking out hurricane evacuees, or anger big-spending repeat customers who travel for business.

Well, there is only one thing that I can say, or actually ask.
Okay FEMA and the US Goverment, what are you going to do for these people now? Or are you just going to add to the number of homeless on our streets today?

Maybe put them in the boats they rent from the army?

I hope they won't be homeless for long... and that they will not end up in FEMA camps or bird-flu pandemic camps...

This is very concering. In a time like this where these victoms are in desperate need of shelter, this hotel chain is more concerned about potential profit from an already huge cliental..

Can you blame them?

It is not the job of the Hotel to house people in a case of an emergency, but the job of the state. It is not the job of private industry in a Capitalist Society to do the states work when the state fails...

Maybe the U.S. Government shouldn't waste so much money on external issues and provide a much better Nation to its people? Because it is easily able too...

I agree, it is up to the goverment to provide proper delegated authority in this crisis, however, it still is very demeaning to see this hotel chain throw these people back out. The goverment has taken the back seat to private charities raising funds for the victims. They need not be responsible when the 'good and caring' people of the U.S. will privately support efforts to help..

gunz, why should a private company do the work of the Government?

It's shocking how few people support socialism when it suits them and the rest of the time just love the Capitalism...

If they did I bet they'd balance the budget and make a profit.

That being said, I have to agree, it isn't the hotel chains that needs to take care of these people. Sad but true.

It's not up to the Hilton Hotel chain to pony up the dough to help those made homeless by a hurricane.

They have stockholders and creditors and a bottom line to hit.

What the federal government has to do is say to Hilton, Never mind profits, here's the money to set them up for a little while longer until we can figure things out.

I'll continue to stay at the Hilton. Their soft, soft towels are, uh, great as luggage padding.

Dude, what choice so they have? Have you ever run a business? Imagine that a few hotels in that franchise will go under, because they'll lose customers and also the balance sheet will start to collapse. People will lose jobs. Uncool.

Yeah, and don't forget about the free mini lotion bottles.....

It is definately not the responsibility of Hilton Hotels to lodge these people up. The US Gov't should rent out a couple hotels here and there to put the people in.....that would work.
