A vaccine that is still in the late-stage of trials has proven to entirely prevent early-stage cervical cancer as well as precancerous cervical lesions for the two most common forms of the cervical cancer virus.
The two most common forms of this virus, human papillomavirus, types 16 and 18, are responsible for an estimated 70 percent of cervical cancer cases.
Half of the women in the 3rd stage of the trials recieved three doses of Gardasi, for a 6 month period. After 17 months, these women were 100% free of precancerous lesions and early-stage cancers.
The women who only received a placebo reported 21 cases of precancerous lesions and early-stage cancers.
There is hope that this vaccine will also be successful in protecting women from an additional 6 other cancer causing viruses.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An experimental Merck & Co. vaccine completely prevented early-stage cervical cancer and precancerous cervical lesions caused by the two most common forms of a virus linked to such cancers, Merck said on Thursday.
"This trial confirms that a vaccine can give young women a high level of protection from developing precancerous lesions and early cervical cancers," Laura Koutsky, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Washington who led the study, told Reuters.

Shares of Merck rose 2 percent in early trading.
