Scientists have made from scratch the Spanish flu virus that killed as many as 50 million people in 1918, the first time an infectious agent behind a historic pandemic has ever been reconstructed.

Oh, great. Good thing they got rid of all those pesky microbiologists!
I can hear them now. "We can rebuild it, we can make it better than it was"
What could possibly go wrong?

For the record, SUNY Stonybrook was the first place to build a virus from scratch, the polio virus, the above is nuancing (reasonably) that this is the first time with a 'pandemic' virus.

Well i think the main thing is that they may learn from it, And hopefully find ways to treat such things if they ever arise,

Im sure it will be something that is closley watched,

Scientists need access to the research as they try to develop vaccines and antiviral medications against potential future pandemic agents, said Donald Kennedy, editor-in-chief of Science.
