The Taliban regime in Afghanistan is no longer in power, though U.S. troops and the forces loyal to Afghan President Hamid Karzai continue to feel the wrath from Taliban remnants from time to time. President Karzai's grip on the country remains tenuous at best.
The Baath regime in Iraq is also no longer in power but Saddam loyalists and others are certainly still a factor in Iraq and a deadly threat to U.S. troops and their allies. And they have been bolstered by a steady influx of other foreigners who hate America.
In the United States, the political season is now very evident. The president wants to be re-elected, and Democrats are lining up to deny him that honor. If you've been watching the Democratic debates, the nine candidates are clearly saving their best salvos for Mr. Bush as opposed to their Democratic opponents, and it's only just beginning.
Two years later -- some things change but other things stay the same.
