Xinhua: UAE urged to stop official contacts with Taiwan

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang on Friday urged the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to stop official contacts with Taiwan.

"The United Arab Emirates ignored China's strong opposition and insisted on allowing Chen Shui-bian to pass through and have political activities. It violated the UAE's commitment to sticking to the one-China policy and brought about a negative impact on the China-UAE relations," Qin said.

"We have expressed strong dissatisfaction about this and put forward a serious presentation to the UAE," Qin said. "We require that the UAE immediately stop official contacts with Taiwan in any form."

This is pretty strong words. They demand them to not have any official contacts "in any form". Wow! I wonder how UAE will respond to this. Or Taiwan...

Wow are they expecting everybody to give in to them? It seems to me that China is becoming more like the world's "spoilt brat".

Hellmutt, nice presentation there on the original post.

China is turning up the heat for one-China policy, but this is just rediculous. They are going to use something as lame as a visit by Chen as an excuse to "require" that the UAE cease all contact with Taiwan? I suppose now that any country that accepts a visit from Chen is going to be required by China to cease all contact with Taiwan? Great. Then how bout a trip to Vegas, Chen? Would ya like that?

In searching for a possible economic reason China might be doing this, the world fact book (WFB) lists that the UAE imports about 10.4% of its machinery, transport equipment, chemicals and food from China. And one might think the UAE would export oil to China, but they don't. Most of it goes to Japan. So economically, the only thing China has over the UAE are those exports. China imports nothing much from the UAE, at least accoring the the WFB. And further, according to the WFB, there does not appear to be any measurable exchange of goods between Taiwan and the UAE.

So to me this move appears purely political in motive. A childish warning to other nations that would receive Chen and dishonor Beijing's demand for a single China. And a backdoor slap in the face to Taiwan while they're at it. How groovy.

Or maybe even to provoke Taiwan into doing something regrettable that gives China the little "public" reason they need to invade?

Or no, now China is gonna invade the UAE. Yeah that's it...
