intrepid, I see what ya sayin. Maybe they could do like a People of BC law suit. And then put the money towards NGO's (non-gov't organzitions). Or maybe even start up something new just for that case.

No man, they tax it to the hilt, $8.50 a pack. Even in Canuck dollars that's a lot. Imo, they've already had their cut.

OK, Im lost (nothing new)...The gov't makes billions from the tobacco industry, so why would they wanna infringe on one of thier money making machines

So who is sueing? Is it the "people" of BC, or is it BC the Gov't?

EDIT: $8.50 a pack!!!! Why in the hell would the gov't wanna sue with a tax like that!!!

The ball is rolling.

Quebec smokers seek $17.8-billion in lawsuit

One day after a landmark Supreme Court of Canada ruling cleared the way for British Columbia to sue tobacco companies for lost health care costs, smokers in Quebec have filed a class-action lawsuit seeking up to $17.8-billion in damages.

"In dollar terms, this is to my knowledge the largest class-action suit that has been undertaken in Canada," said Gordon Kugler, a senior partner with Kugler Kandestin, which along with Trudel & Johnston will be representing the province's smokers.

The case against Rothmans Inc., Imperial Tobacco Canada Ltd. and JTI-Macdonald Corp. was consolidated into a class-action suit in February after the Quebec Superior Court authorized a single suit on behalf of the roughly 1.78 million Quebeckers addicted to nicotine.

It's the gov't. I guess this is a case of having your cake and eating it too. BTW, in the Maritimes you will pay more than $10 a pack. ($8.50 in Ontario)

So the money is going to the smokers and not to the community as a whole. Hell it's not even going to education or smokers awareness.

The lawsuit seeks $10,000 in damages for each smoker, half for punitive damages and the other half for moral damages.
**********
In addition, Mr. Kugler said there is a separate class-action lawsuit in Quebec that is expected to proceed against the same tobacco companies on behalf of people who allege that they got cancer from smoking.

These people made a decision to smoke. The effects of smoking has been around for years and people know...they knew of cancer and addiction for years. And even after the that they could have got into a program to quit smoking.

The legislation has the hazards right on the pack, here's one:

www.fisherhouse.com...

Like I said, it's a cash grab.

BTW, the provincial 8% tax is supposed to be for health care. Not to mention the tax imposed on cig's already.

What's the problem? Mismanagement. We had a federal registry of firearms recently that was supposed to cost a couple of mil. It went over a BILLION! Where's the money going? Our gov't is among the most corrupt in the western world BUT they're not accountable because the alternative is unacceptable. Sound familliar?
