Spy Trawlers

Topic started on 9-9-2003 @ 11:47 AM by DeltaNine

Does anyone know much about spy trawlers? What Im looking for specifically is how to ID them, say by a trawler having gear that wouldnt or shouldnt be on a normal trawler and radio aerials.

Ive googled it, but cant find much. I found a good photo of one on Globalsecurity too, no info at all about it though.

So, anybody know anything?

EDIT: For clarity.

I just saw a show about this on History Channel or maybe it was Discovery, but anyway.............

There are patterns that trawlers take, If a specific trawler is out of a pattern and staying in one location.....then that should be a clue.

I would think taht most fishing trawlers cannot afford to lurk about without catching fish to pay for the expense of operating a big trawler. These fishermen work very hard for their living and signs of that hard work should be easy to spot.
1- Birds and lots of them looking for a free lunch
2- Worn nets and rigging that is still in working order
3- returning to port heavy in the water with a huge load of fish
4- leaving port light in the water
5- generally found in areas known for fishing
6- if they are fishing, they should haul some fish in once in a while

Patterns eh? I might have to get the scanner out and go for a wander down to the docks.
