The European mobility Week

From 16th to 22nd September 2005 European citizens will have the opportunity to enjoy a full week of events dedicated to sustainable mobility. The objective is to facilitate widespread debate on the necessity for changes in behaviour in relation to mobility and in particular the use of the private car. As usual, the Car Free Day will be the highlight of the whole Week.

In relation to this focal theme, events can for example be organised on Public Transport, Cycling, Living Streets, Greenways, Responsible Car Use, Mobility Management, Leisure & Shopping, Mobility & Health as well as Intermodality.

Based on the success and lessons learnt from the International Car Free Day ("In town without my car!") initiated in France in 1998, The European Mobility Week (supported by the European Commission's DG Environment) was launched on 19th April 2002 in Brussels (during the Green Week) by European Commissioner for Environment Mrs Margot Wallström and other stakeholders.

In our nations Capitol Ljubljana and other Slovene Cities you can rent bycicles for free, you can buy railroad tickets with 40% discount (they are free for children uder age of 12) and persons from our capitols public bus transportation are handing free bus fares. And on the last day, the 22nd of September, we will have a Day Without a Car, where in all our major cities the centers will be closed for traffic.

Is there such an event anywhere else in the world?

I think all the major cities should have a day like this, world wide.
People really need to start thinking about an alternative to driving. We are far to dependent on the machine.
