Mohammed al Waili, the governor of the province, said the British raid was "barbaric, savage and irresponsible".

"A British force of more than 10 tanks backed by helicopters attacked the central jail and destroyed it," he said.

"This is an irresponsible act."

He added that the British force had spirited the prisoners away to an unknown location.

MoD officials insist they have been talking to the Iraqi authorities to secure the release of the men - who were reported to be working undercover.

But they do acknowledge a wall was demolished as UK forces tried to "collect" the men Iraqi police accused of firing on them.

Seems that some things are conflicting at the moment. Best to wait to hear the whole thing.

Is this necessarily good news or bad?
Good in that the British soldiers were busted out, literally.
Bad that now one has to wonder at the future relations between the local British forces in and near Basra and the Iraqi local police and authorities.
Let's see: two Iraqi policemen killed, and a jail demolished to the point that 150 prisoners escaped. Btw, who is going to re-capture those 150 escaped prisoners?

2 funny about all the criminals getting out...bet they get scooped up by the local gangs etc. can't see em going anywere....so now they prob. have no choice but to join the war....or steal again just to survive.

These two guys were probably in pretty deep, so deep that the Brits couldn't allow the chance of them being whisked away from the jail by insurgents or sympathizers within the Iraqi police force. Negotiations probably were made or attempted, but the going was too slow for comfort.

It does kind of show that the Emperor of sovereign Iraq wears no clothes, though... (no, I'm not talking about Saddam).

"Two persons wearing Arab uniforms opened fire at a police station in Basra. A police patrol followed the attackers and captured them to discover they

were two British soldiers," an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua.

The two soldiers were using a civilian car packed with explosives, the source said.

Funny how they managed to not kill a single person when they opened fire on the market. Now either they're really bad marksmen that couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, they didn't open fire, or they did and were intentionally trying not to kill anyone.

The point of trying to start a civil war would be? The Iraqi government already has said they want US troops to stay. They want to cut the numbers down, but they want them to stay for at least the next several years. So it can't be for the troops to stay. It certainly wouldn't be to settle things down so that some of the troops can come home. So what's the purpose of trying to start a civil war?

Divide and conquer - Get iraqies to start fighting each other instead of fighting the occupation. This will creat more opportunists vying for power, to collaborate with the occupiers.

Defame the Resistance- The US learned from vietnamn that a gorrilla army can only exist with a good civilian support base. These bombings are designed to get the iraqi people to distrust and dislike the iraqi resistance, and hence that would destroy the resistance.

Create a reason to stay - The brits and the US can now claim that they need to be in iraq longer to "protect the civilian population." ironically the people who they are killing.

I'm talking about the ORIGINAL TWO that were arrested. Supposedly they drove up to a very crowded market and opened fire, and DIDN'T KILL A SINGLE PERSON.

Oh and if the British troops raided the prison in two tanks and an APC and managed to kill ONE PERSON then that also says a lot about whether they were trying to kill people or not. heh. A tank could run over large numbers of people without firing a shot, or slowing down. If they even fired their main gun near a crowd of people they could kill someone just from the blast under the right conditions.

Except that the current President of Iraq has ALREADY SAID that they will give the US basing rights to STAY in Iraq. He said that at a speech in the US a couple of weeks ago, or longer. I can't remember exactly when it was.

The resistance was already doing a pretty good job of giving itself a bad name. I've heard many reports of normal citizens shooting back at resistance fighters that were shooting at American troops, or stopping US convoys and warning them of mined areas, or IEDs along the road....

If they did not mention a dead policeman does that make in an incontrovertable fact that you can carve in stone?

Actually no, They didn't drive up to a crowded market and shoot at a crowd, where did you hear this? they drove up to a Police station/checkpoint. Perhaps there where civilians around it. but it was a checkpoint not a market place.

A car did not obey the "stop" order at the police checkpoint in Emin Dahili of Basra on Monday morning and responded to the police by firing. The car could only be stopped by some more police cars.

The two British soldiers were dressed like Arabs and waved a British flag from the car and asked the police not to fire.

And they shot at iraqi police. "wounding several, including a traffic police officer." i guess the bullets where being aimed at the bodies.

I am sure their where civilians around because otherwise the false flag operaiton wouldn't be as effective.

The Iraqi's were already fighting each other, Sunni against Shiite. This wasn't because of the Americans, this was because Saddam was Sunni and favoured the Sunni people over Shiites. This can be seen in the banning of certqain Shiite religious festivals etc.

So you're saying that all these suicide bombers who witnesses say were Iraqi aren't ? How does that work ? Are you saying Iraqi's can't recognise their own people ?

Hmm, I don't think anyone wants to stay in Iraq, lol. Once there is a stable secular governemnt they'll leave. Which I happen to totally agree with. We've seen what happnes when religious fundamentalism pervades governemnt, juts look at the Taliban in Afghanistan.
