Al Qeada Declares War On Shias

Al Qaeda in Iraq has declared "war against Shias" in the country, according to a statement believed to be from its leader. In an audio tape, Abu Musab Al Zarqawi, a sunni, is purported to call for the death of all those linked with the US-backed Iraqi government. The news comes during a day of bomb attacks in Baghdad.

In the first attack, at least 16 police commandos were killed when their patrol was struck in southern Doura district.

On Wednesday, suicide bombings and shootings killed at least 150 people in some of the bloodiest attacks since a US-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.

The most deadly of the attacks involved a car filled with explosives being driven into a square packed with mainly Shi'ite Muslim labourers.

Around 110 people are thought to have been killed in that attack alone.
