Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged world leaders to carry out "constructive" reform of the UN. He told the UN summit weighing a reform package that the process should "unite, not separate" the world community. The organisation must play a central role in the fight against terrorism, Mr Putin told the gathering of some 150 world leaders in New York.

Mr Putin told leaders that terrorism was the main threat to human rights and development.

Collective international action was the best weapon to defeat the phenomenon, he said.

"There is a need to adjust this organisation to the new historical reality," he said.

"Who else will take the role of co-ordinating and organising this work but the United Nations?"

Oh how nice would it be to have a UN that could actually solve problems in the world rather than shy away from them!

We need the UN to have a bit more 'backbone' in future and sort what seems to be a failing world out quickly!
