Ophelia, North Carolina’s six-day storm, finally seems intent on leaving.

Even today, however, it is nibbling at the Outer Banks, chewing up a wide expanse of beaches as it slowly heads north, less than 100 miles offshore.

“It just beat us and beat us and beat us,” said Laurie Garner, whose boyfriend’s restaurant was severely damaged at Salter Path on Bogue Sound, south of the Outer Banks.

That area, which was hammered by strong southerly winds and the resultant storm surge it kicked up, appears to be the epicenter of damage in North Carolina.

Numerous buildings, including homes and businesses, were wrecked in several barrier island communities along the sound. No damage estimates have been set, however.
