Jalal Talabani, the Iraqi president has stated that the United States should be careful when they withdraw their troops from Iraq. He said that they should not withdraw hastily, but as a slow process over the next two years. He claims that a withdrawal of American and multinational forces in the future may lead on to a victory for the terrorists and cause a huge threat to the region.

Speaking in Washington, he said a withdrawal of American and multinational forces in the near future could lead to a victory for terrorists and create grave threats to the region.

President Talabani says American forces are needed not only to fight against terrorism, but to prevent some of Iraq's neighbours from interfering in its internal affairs.

The United States has about 140 thousand troops in Iraq and is training Iraqi forces to take over.

However, recent U.S. military assessments question the capability of Iraqi forces to do the job.

The withdrawal of troops from Iraq cannot be done until the situation is completely resolved. As soon as the troops are pulled we could see an up rising of militants and smaller rebels within Iraq, which may be seen as a complete failure in the invasion of Iraq. I hope that things can be sorted within the region but I would hate to see things rushed, causing more problems.
