Maybe it's not in the 10's of thousands as some were guessing earlier.
The part about the bodies clogging the pumps relly bugged me..

From the story

Authorities said Friday that their first systematic sweep of the city found far fewer bodies than expected, suggesting that Hurricane Katrina's death toll may not be the catastrophic 10,000 feared.

How large are the gators now?

I hope not. That is very depressing news.

DG,

The gator quote was from a different take on the story..
sorry 'bout that..This story mentioned bodies clogging up the pumps..
Which also bugs me..

Here is the other story mentioning the alligators, in the more rural areas.

I'm not suprised to hear that the death toll is much lower than the media was claiming.

Bigger numbers = higher ratings.

Folks really need to remember this.

officials said the mammoth undertaking could be complicated by corpses getting clogged in the pumps.

Bold Added.

Please, please, PLEASE, don't get focused on the "could be"s! Rumor and rampent speculation has a way of becoming "facts" when the media finds something sensational enough to report.

That offical was talking about a possiblity, not something that has happened. Let's not alow things like that to overshadow real issues!

BitRaiser,
I agree with you on the speculation, and sensationalism..
It's everywhere, and like you said, it increases ratings..
Reality is, it's just the phrase itself that bothered me..
the idea of someones corpse, clogging up the plumbing, or being digested by
a huge reptile..

Remember on 9/11 when they were sure there might be 100,000 dead? Turns out it was around 3,000.

Still too many...but the media has this annoying habit of inflating numbers.
