Inhalable insulin gets FDA panel OK

As anyone who deals with diabetes can attest, daily insulin shots are a necessary, but often annoying and sometimes troublesome part of health maintenance.

Now there are two new possible alternatives - the first, and more ground-breaking, is the inhaled insulin delivery system. Called Exubera, it could feasibly eliminate the need for meal-time injections for patients with both types of diabetes. Though more studies are needed to assess the effects on long-term pulmonary function, the FDA has tentatively recommended approval.

The other new addition to the diabetes drug cache is Pargluva. Though not the first oral diabetes treatment, it's the first of a new class of oral treatments (called the glitizars), and it appears to be more effective than anything marketed to date.

More on Pargluva

As pancreatic transplants currently aren't feasible (or effective) for the majority of diabetics, at least with these two more user-friendly types of treatment it might make life a little easier; specially for kids.

I live in hope
