Inhalable insulin gets FDA panel OK
As anyone who deals with diabetes can attest, daily insulin shots are a necessary, but often annoying and sometimes troublesome part of health
maintenance.
Now there are two new possible alternatives - the first, and more ground-breaking, is the inhaled insulin delivery system. Called
Exubera, it could feasibly eliminate the need for meal-time injections for
patients with both types of diabetes. Though more studies are needed to assess the effects on long-term pulmonary function, the FDA has tentatively
recommended approval.
