I think if you look at the death toll (summary) by state on this page:
Wikipedia (chart almost half-way down on the right) it might become more
clear. Keep in mind that NOLA's deaths have not been counted because of the floods but there have been estimates anywhere from 'thousands' to
50,000 (and I've even heard more). So, while the
state of Mississippi has maybe 200-300 deaths, the
city of New Orleans has perhaps
100 times that or more.
And as far as I know there was no disasterous flooding anywhere else.
I'm not saying those deaths and damage aren't important, they just don't compare to the NOLA situation and that just may be the reason you're
hearing much more about NOLA than the other hurricane-hit areas.
I know Biloxi was terribly damaged. I was married and lived in Biloxi for a couple years back in the dark ages. I know the beautiful old house I lived
in is completely gone.
