Remembering what that idea did last time, I hope we seperate if it does happen.
Ontario is on the verge of being a "have not" province and now they want Albertas money. If money is a problem then the Liberals should take some of that big surplus to help Canadians out.

i think that's a great idea. nationalise ALL energyand resources. energy barons are evil by nature.
manufacturing, refining, etc. should all be private, in my opinion, but the control and the CAREFUL RATIONING of natural resouces should be left in the hands of the public.

Typical "My Precious" mentality. Last Census a good portion of Alberta put in their ethnicity as "Canadian" you know. Talk of seperation at this point is just that all talk. All Treudeux did was bar foreign companies from investing or completely owning any Oil assets in Canada. Seems fair too me but it seems the Albertan's don't care if America strips their province of it's and Canada's resources.

In my opinion, there is no reason AT ALL for any private ownership of natural resources. Just because someone has been born in a certain place at a certain time does not justify owning large parts of the natural world.
Private companies can exploit the resources, but only as allowed by the state, and with a substantial part of the profits reverting to the state for the good of the general population.
The idea that the free economy can magically solve all the problems is a prejudice that is very hard to uproot. Look at the situation as a balance of forces: the one who has more, wins. The one who sits on a god-given source of profits, will have more and more. There is no motivation for the oil companies to provide the same social benefits that a well-functioning state can provide. The idea that the ideal set of motivations can be manufactured is a capitalist utopia.

I have a great idea: Let's hand over our most valuable commodity and most viable means of energy to the most corrupt organization in our country. Yes, this'll be terrific!

The half of Canada without the oil needs to quit their bitching or head west. Either way, it is not my business entirely.

Did you know that in most European countries it says right in the Constitution that any natural resource belongs to the State?
Did you know that in Norway the oil companies that exploit the oil have to pay decent taxes to the Government because all they can do is exploit a concession that is periodically reviewed and can even be revoked?

Did the article say that the half that supported nationalization are living in the East? Of course not.

StarBreather - We are talking about Canada, not the socialist pigs of Europe. The provinces which favor this move with 67% and higher than 45% are in the east. Alberta, the province with the oil sands, favors this move by 36%. This seems like actually more than half in the east favor the move.

In Alberta certainly the oil companies pay royalties and taxes to the government there.

I like the way the Economist Mag calls Alberta the Kuwait of North America. National oil companies are pretty darn inefficient with the exception of PetroBras and their deep water ingenuity. We should make public all the water bottling firms too. All the mineral spring baths operators and maybe have a national air conditioning machine company.

The Alberta coffers are overflowing with enough juice for everyone. They don't even know what to do with all the money. Schools are at peak performance, roads are awesome and they're the only province without a deficeit. Pillaging, or legal plundering the excess loot seems alright to me, but forming a national oil company with control over all the provinces assets? I was under the impression that no one owns the mineral rights under the ground but the government. The government then leases these mineral rights to private, efficient companies to extract and feed supply. This is why you hear so many complaints from land owners who have had drilling contractors set up shop on their land. What is PetroCanada anyway? Husky, TransCanada and countless other headquarters based in Calgary are primarily Canadian companies. How much more nationalised do you want it? Don't like the price of gas? Petition the government for price ceilings and have them pick up the bill.

Theres no question the oil barrons of Calgary are getting richer, but so are their shareholders and countless other beneficiaries of the trickle down effect. Don't forget Alberta has some of the most progressive economic policies with low tax rates that help industry boom. Don't be jealous of them, they're just the most economically conservative province in the country, which explains a lot. All you Soviet Canuckistanis should realise that its the lack of your socialist policies in the first place that have allowed Alberta oil and gas to become such a boom industry. All you have to do is compare it to Saskatchewan. Is more socialism the way to go? Don't be retarted. If you aren't gettign trickled on, move. It's called migration and people do it all the time, especially consider this if you are from Quebec or the Atlantic provinces. Speaking as a free market economist and as someone with immediate family responsible for privatising the New Zealand national oil company, this would be a terrible exercise in mis-management of resources. Get the government out of the way.

That's the thing about a national oil company, its executive management is based on politics and back scratching, not delivering the goods to impatient shareholders. Using a national oil company to put more power in the hands of the people is ludicrous, you will establish a political corporation. It's not only socialist, it's facist.
