A US Official from the Health and Human Services admits that its evident that the death toll has reached thousands in areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. Single morgues were expecting 1,000-2,000 bodies alone. Reports of more problems from disease and famine into the future.

"If you do the math, there's 500,000 people in the city," the mayor said. "We probably evacuated 80 percent after the mandatory evacuation."

Nagin said another 50,000 to 60,000 people sought shelter at the Louisiana Superdome sports complex and the New Orleans convention center.

"So you probably have another 50,000 to 60,000 out there," he said. "You do the math, man. What do you think? Five percent is unreasonable? Ten percent? Twenty percent? It's going to be a big number."

I think the death toll has to be close to at least 10,000. New Orleans was located almost 100 miles inland, and very few people thought they needed to evacuate. Some places in the city are under 15 feet of water. Coupled with the releif effort and the amount of violence in the city, it might even be worse then expected.

Yup, like a modern day Atlantis being sunken, now it seems this story is quite plausible.

Saw the news tonight, confirmed deaths are in the hundreds BUT estimates are much higher. Bottom line is that no one knows yet.
