"US: Cleanup Costs for Toxic Gas Additive Could be Billions

by Michael Gardner, Copley New Service
June 15th, 2005

SACRAMENTO – Staring at potential payouts in the billions of dollars, the U.S. oil industry is maneuvering to escape responsibility for cleaning up after MTBE, the now-banned toxic gasoline additive that has seeped into drinking water across the country. "

Sounds like another transfer bill from rich to poor. Rich cause a global disaster. Tax payers pick up the tab.

The government mandated the use of oxygenates. Congress approved the use of MTBE despite Congressional testimony that it had problems. Congress armtwisted oil companies into 'choosing' MTBE over other alternatives. When California first realized the extent of the problem MTBE created, the EPA tried to stop California from banning it

It's not the oil companies problem. It's Congress' problem. The spineless cowards in Washington and in the environmental industry are just trying to spin the blame elsewhere.

There is a big problem here when you say the government is responsible here. Since when is the "government," distinguishable from corporate profit, with all the lobbies, arm twisting, and goon squads sheltered by newpapers and mass media?

When will people please wake up here?
