Cost of Iraq occupation is billions upon billions

Topic started on 3-9-2003 @ 05:59 PM by John Nada

WASHINGTON - One of the most vocal critics of President Bush's policy in Iraq is citing a report by congressional budget analysts to back his claim that the administration must get other countries to send peacekeepers there.

The study by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, released Tuesday, said U.S. military operations in Iraq could cost an estimated $8 billion to $29 billion a year.

Come on think about it, BILLIONS!!! Think of all the good that could be done with that money, YOUR MONEY. Instead it's getting blown on some bulls**t war that no intelligent person wanted anyway. Imagine sending billions of dollars worth of food and aid out there every couple of months, they wouldn't be able to keep on hating us for that.

And this is exactly why the US govt is suddenly trying to get other countries to take partial control (share the cost) in Iraq. Well, he wouldn't want to lose an election now, would he?

Well, I ran across some info & figured on searching for an existing thread to put it in, rather than create a new thread...Regardless of how old this thread is, I figured my info fits here best.
--------------------
Genocide in Iraq Costs Taxpayers More Than Mere Money to Commit Genocide in Iraq

How many dead?
Iraqis Slaughtered In US War And Occupation Of Iraq: 1,236,604. How many of these were "non-combatant" women & children, I wonder?
Number of U.S. Military Personnel Sacrificed (Officially acknowledged) In U.S. War And Occupation Of Iraq: 4,121

How much cost?
Source: National Priorities Project
The link above also points out how much of our own prosperity & lifestyle is adversely affected by the US Invasion of the Middle East. So is this the National Priority of American Citizens? Sacrificing our money & the support for our Civic Infrastructure to carry on a mad conquest that benefits only the ruling elite & their Corporate Allies? Why do you think that I've often referred to the Bush Administration here at ATS as "Bully Boy Bush & His Corporate Crony Gang?" It's only a brutally honest & straightforward title to give them.

One particular point I looked up outlines that the proposed ballistic missle defense program for fiscal year 2009 by itself will cost $6.1 Million for my city alone & could be traded off to provide for one year:
1,826 people or 2,600 Children with Health Care
or 6,867 Homes with Renewable Electricity
or 146 Public Safety Officers
or 129 Music and Arts Teachers or 137 Elementary School Teachers
or 995 Scholarships for University Students
or 923 Head Start Places for Children
or 97 Port Container Inspectors
or 76 Affordable Housing Units

Note that this is figuring (only) the $6.1 Million that my city will pay for the one military program mentioned...The cost for my city alone in Fiscal Year 2008 for two military programs:
$5.2 million for ballistic missile defense
$7.6 million for nuclear weapons

How about the approved cost (for my city) in FY 2009:
$8 Million for proposed nuclear weapons
$58.3 million for tax cuts for the richest 10%

How about $328.2 million for total Iraq war spending approved to date...My city alone!

"Conquest is not in our principles. It is inconsistent with our government."--Thomas Jefferson

I don't know about you, but I can think of better things to support than the US Government's mad dash to conquest through selective genocide. This look at the War in Iraq would be enough to make Hitler turn green with envy.
