Bush signs $US10.5 billion spending bill for Katrina (moved from ATSNN), page 1

George Bush has pledged some funding for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. He has described this as a " down payment" on future funding for rebuilding in the Gulf Coast and the surrounding areas affected by the storm. Exactly how much money will be awarded in the future has not been specified.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush signed a $US10.5 billion measure on Friday to speed federal aid to Gulf Coast areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Bush and Congress have described the measure as a downpayment on what will be a larger amount of money to be made available in coming weeks.

The package was signed into law just hours after a few dozen of the 435 members of the House of Representatives met in an emergency session to approve the spending. The Senate passed the measure on Thursday.

After harsh criticism from a lot of corners , including here on ATS , it seems that the President has finally started to act to help in this area. How long will it take for these funds to become available? I would hope that this funding , anf the troops and aid that has been promised, dont get tangled up in red tape, taking even more time. Far too much has elapsed already.

The question remains , however , as to the fate of the people left in New Orleans and the areas affected by the storm. New Orleans is finally getting some aid it seems, but the situation remains dire. It seems that governments are just not moving fast enough to cope with the disaster that is left in the storms wake.
