The 40th annual Jerry Lewis telethon, which normally only benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association, will also benefit Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Lewis announced the telethon will give $1 million of its donations to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina and it does not stop there. Some TV stations also have announced that the first four hours and last four hours of their donations that would normally go to MDA will go to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Other TV stations have made similar statements. Some are saying the first several hours along with the last four hours dedicated to the victims of Katrina.

Jerry Lewis will set aside part of his annual Labor Day Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association for celebrity appeals for donations to hurricane relief. The stars will make their appeals during the first four hours and last four hours of the marathon, 21.5-hour telecast, Lewis said Thursday.

Donations for hurricane victims will be collected over a separate toll-free telephone number. All proceeds will go to the Salvation Army's efforts in the affected states.

Lewis also announced that the MDA will donate $1 million of its own funds to help people in the storm-stricken states.

"We simply couldn't ignore the need to help," the legendary comedian said. "We already have the infrastructure in place."

NBC and its affiliates kicked off their own telethon earlier tonight to raise funds for the victims of Katrina which was also a very nice gesture and it does not stop there. Companies around the nation are making their donations and are matching donations from their employees as well.

This is not limited to just money it also include emergency supplies from generators to engines, boats; the list goes on and on.

This is wonderful news to see our nations largest telethon join in to help and I am sure any and all help will be greatly appreciated by the victims of this horrendous hurricane.
