With all the bad news we keep seeing and hearing about the devastation from Katrina and the inhuman condition so many people are still enduring in the regions affected by hurricane Katrina, there seems to be even more bad news which will affect the whole nation.
There are 20 oil rigs which are missing from the Gulf and at least one oil pipeline, where a rig was located that has ruptured and is on fire. Firefighters are not even going to try to put it out, as they say the fire will eventualy burn out, but noone knows what happened to the oil rigs. Some of them could have sunk, or they could just be missing, but the repercursions of this in our economy will be felt by everyone.

"We have confirmed at least 20 rigs or platforms missing, either sunk or adrift, and one confirmed fire where a rig was," Petty Officer Robert Reed of the Louisiana Coast Guard told AFP.

All of the missing rigs were in the Gulf of Mexico, Reed said citing Coast Guard overflights of the area and information from oil companies.

We should be concentrating on helping the people that are still trapped in the areas which are flooded, but this is another addition to bad news for the United States and it's people.

There's a certain irony, [albeit, a costly one for us,] in the ocean striking back at the culprit that is heating it up.

This is just incredible. It honestly is. In my opinion 9/11 doesn't compare to Katrina. With 9/11 the attacks were over in a matter of hours. With this it is just an endless series of bad events. It is one after another just compounding previous problems. How much worse will it get?

You can not compare 9/11, an attack on our country from foreigners out to kill Americans, to a natural disaster that causes massive tradgedy of death and economic disaster; Both are horrible tradgedies but can not be compared to each other; God Bless those who are in need; Pay your $5 a gallon and be glad your alive to do so;

Hurricane Ivan (as well as many others) took a great toll on rigs in the Gulf, ‘lost’ rigs were found adrift from their moorings with varying damage. Oil production in the Gulf would be closed anyway, pipelines, terminals etc. all have to be inspected, rigs re-manned and engaged. This type of activity is not new to the oil gas producers in the Gulf regions.

No you are right Nightwalker. You can't compare. Katrina was worse. 9/11 showed how people in a bad situation can come together to make things better. Katrina shows how completely people in America are to handle a real disaster. People had warning and did nothing. People had warning and the government was unprepared. And you see thousands of people acting like animals. This storm has brought to the attention of everyone just how bad things can get. What will happen when the New Madrid fault slips? This will make what is happening now look like a disagreement among gentlemen.

I read somewhere, maybe BBC, that Bangladesh has these illegal maritime chop shops.

Also I understand that it's possible a couple of rigs from Ivan were never recovered and rig theft is not that uncommon.

Paint it, change the serial number, and don't take it to a pawn shop.

Seriously though, no idea how you could pull that off.

Actually, you wouldn't believe what goes missing in this world.

LLoyd's of London: www.lloyds.com...

Supertankers, container vessels, satellites, passenger airliners, small aircraft, military equipment ... and on and on. And trust me, not the owner, the thief nor the insurer want the public to know.

wouldn't a stolen tanker be rather easy to spot on a sattilite? I mean, it takes a rather maor effort to move those things.

Maybe they are converted into off-shore casinos, or drug lord bases

Each theft has its own unique signature. Some cases merely require false documents and inside help from complicit bureaucracies and/or criminal organizations.

Another method is camoflage and then there is dismantling, like a "chop shop".

I think we have found out about the limitations of satellites. I have heard it described that to get the resolution needed for even an approximate identification, the image obtained resembles looking at the earth through a drinking straw.

I guess when it comes to theft of even these mega-structures, where there is a will, there is a way.

Oh, how absurd! Lets all just go nuts and check ourselves into mental hospitals...Surely this isnt happening.
I think we all died in the year 2000 and we are all in hell. We're not alive, we just think we are.

I'll get the cards and we can all play till we get our meds!

After so much media coverage of loss, destruction and mayhem I just thought some dumb-a$$ humour would lighten the mood...no offence intended, ok?
