These prices are outrageous and they will keep going up. Plus the oil is running out in the world. We need a replacement to run cars and crap... a much less expensive way. Soon I'll be just riding a bike/ taking the bus to places... if it keeps going up like this... This has got to stop

It was unfortunate for America that Katrina hit at such an arkward time, well, it was unfortunate that the hurricane hit at all.

The cost of petrol will continue to be high providing there is sufficient demand to bolster the prices.

Also, I'd like to add that oil is not running out; our share might just be peaking, which means we've used half of it. Ideally, this shouldn't be a problem but because the worlds attitute towards energy policy generally stinks, it means we face a lot of problems due to supply shortages and demand++.

The only way prices will cease to go up is if people realise that there needs to be an attitude change towards energy policies -- which won't happen until crude reaches $100+, at which time it'll be too late.

At the moment we are fighting a war against mother nature, and make no mistake -- Mummy will win if we don't appease her, sharpish.

motionknight is correct. The oil barons are not going to allow an alterative fuel to be introduced, it would cut into their profits. There were many alternative fuel vehicles that were introduced as concept vehicles, but quickly died after thier unveiling. They did allow the hybrid vehicles though but guess what? They still use gas and oil.

I am not quite sure who was responsible for that Space Race but imagine if we had one to build a vehicle that is enviromentaly safe and self suffient. Then we would not have to worry about the price of fuel for the ever growing car population.

Gas in the US is cheaper than gas in europe and canada, obviously the economy and population can shoulder a much larger increase.

The 'oil barons' are only making so much money because we are consistently buying their produce -- petroleum.

I don't particularly think the oil companies are doing anything wrong, they are only making so much money because they are in the most lucrative business on the planet, our world economy is a petro-economy! Petroleum is the life blood of the world -- the black gold -- without it we would be screwed; it's our heroin.

It has taken more than one guilty party to bring us to this situation, so don't think that we, the consumer, don't hold any responsibility because we bloody do!

Many of the people that post here seem to think there is some huge conspiracy unfolding (led by the oil majors and illuminati etc.), dream on guys and girls, there is no conspiracy, just human greed and inability to change. If you can't see this you are living in a fantasy world...

I'm studying a geology at university -- my dissertation is incidentally on peak-oil -- and I do believe that we've reached the 'oil peak', there's bugger-all we can do about it apart from change the way we live.

What we really need to do is quit moaning about gas prices and actually do something positive to alleviate the situation. If we the consumers, as a whole actually gave a # then we could influence change, sadly though, few people actually do give a #, hence we are screwed.

A lot of cheap alternatives that people with SUVs and trucks can do right now. A duel exhaust system($800), a K&N or similiar air filter($40 to 60), synthetic motor oil($4 per quart), a tonneu cover over my truck bed alone saved me 5 mpg on the highway($300), and there are even mod chips that will squeeze a couple more mpg. But most agree the cheapest and most effective is a K&N filter, but you are lucky if it squeezes 1 extra mpg, but it does have the extra benefit of never having to worry about it for 25,000 miles.

I feel compelled to once agian re-iterate that the US really needs federal miles per gallon minimums. Any car getting less than, say, 20 miles a gallon can't be vetted for the road. Hows that sound? Obviously for new cars as of a manufacturing date of 2008 or such. Shouldn't be that difficult. Instead, we have v-12 cadillacs, Hummers, and those absurdly purposely oversized heavy duty trucks for consumers (rather than companies).

They have CAFE standars that mandate fuef efficiency rating of no less than 27.5 MPG for cars and 21 mpg for light trucks but it doesn't apply to all vehicles like large trucks and SUVs.

It needs to be reworked.
